What a fun trip! I know you said money is no object, but I would like to suggest a fairly economical alternative. Aveda has salon training institutes across the country. The one in SoHo is incredible. Check the website for services, etc. I spent the entire day there and can't wait to go again. Plus with the money I save, I can go to shows and then still have shopping money.

I've gotten my wife gift certificates to the Bliss Spa in Soho, on several occassions. For a salon, Bumble and Bumble, has a good reputation.

I would definitely recommend Bumble and Bumble.
Aveda has been known to ruin the hair of unsuspecting customers who think that a student knows what he/she is doing. My son had a girlfriend who lost a bit of hair after the trainee left bleach on her hair and went off and forgot to come back!
They make you sign a form that says you will not sue them if they ruin your hair.
There are better places in NYC.

I don't know anything about hair but my girlfriend's older sister goes to a French guy named Frederic Fekkai on E. 57th, I think that's where it is.

Scarlet, OMG that really happened at Aveda? I didn't let them do anything permanent to me since I have my own stylist at home, even though I was tempted. I still enjoyed the pampering parts, though.

Yes, B&B would be a much better choice for any chemical services / hair cuts.

Where ever you go, check the prices first. A cut can vary from $60 - $350 - and this is not just at the most exclusive salons. And remember that the blow dry is usually ' extra'.

I used to go to Dale at B&B. I believe he is still there. I would recommend him. Note that they only use a razor, and for certain hair types, that is not optimal. For a cheaper alternative, try the Jeffrey Stein salon. There are several locations, but my favorite is on the Upper West Side at 86th Street.

wow - my husband was friends with Michael Gordon, the owner, having seen their work and had a couple of haircuts by various workers, I would recommend anyone there. I haven't been there in a while, but I do not hesitate to recommend them.
wso-yes, she was a student at FIT and had little money, when they had this big student hair thing where it cost little or nothing and you got your photo in one of their ads, she volunteered. Her hair was long and pale anyway, sort of highlighted.
The student put the bleach on her hair, walked away, came back, looked , said it was not ready, and walked away again, this time forgetting to come back.
When her head started to burn, she called over a teacher who had them wash the stuff off, discovering the ends of her hair melting off.
She ended up looking pretty amazing with this platinum white hair, but she had to have several inches cut off shortly after, as it continued to crumble.
If one must use a student anything, go to London and use a Sassoon student

WHO you get to do your hair is more important than where you go IMO. There are good & bad everywhere. Fredric Fekkai is famous (the man & the salon). I went to his salon 10-12 yrs ago when it was in Bergdorf's & had a recommendation for specific stylists (both color & cut) & wound up with an amazing "make over." The problem is their best people are celebrity hounds & only want to do famous people. Parvene (excellent colorist) does Martha Stewart & has been on her show. Frederic himself does Martha's cut. But I had my hair butchered there later by one of the younger stylists.

What is most important to you. a pampering place/atmosphere, a new hairstyle/cut, new color?

Since you say "pamper myself for a day" why not try Elizabeth Arden? They offer a day or half day package including man/ped, hair etc.

My own personal favorite is Kim Lepine on 61st St./Madison Ave. Haircuts & color from $80 + each. Very upscale but comfortable salon.

For curly hair, try Ouidad. For an experience, Oscar Blandi at the Plaza. You will need to make appointments way in advance--sometimes 3 months ahead to get to Oscar.

John Barrett in Bergdorf Goodman. Dylan cuts my hair and he's great! You can also make an appointment at the Susan Ciminelli day spa for some additional pampering (in Bergdorf as well).
