Jed, you don't need a jeep at all.
And I'm glad you're thinking of doing it with a guide. I think it does make a difference. Also, we didn't do the ENTIRE drive although we were gone the entire day...again, we were lucky to be the only ones on the excursion. so when we had enough, the driver turned back.
I'll post a message once I find the name of the company we used.
P.S.: I think Rusty is right on the money when he gives reasons why one would or would not like the ride to Hana.

We used Temptation Tours at 800-817-1234 or www.temptationtours.com.
The name of the driver was Mike. He's originally from NY, moved to Hawaii 20 years ago (caucasian). Had a moustache and salt and pepper hair (maybe in his 50s).
We picked the Heavenly Hana and Haleakala tour. They have lots of other tours too.
But please understand that it was just us on the tour, which probably made the difference. The driver told us stories of driving with 3 couples and 1 couple kept getting into arguments...so I'm sure the other 2 couples ended up HATING the road to Hana!
Have a great honeymoon! Maui is just BEAUTIFUL.
