Best crab cakes are from Hellas. Hella and G&M are owned by brothers and have the same receipe.
i am on the eastern shore. Fishermans Inn/Crab Deck are also very good. Only tourist go to Harris's. that has to be the worst place. Food served with plastic wear and they are not cheap. horrible service also.

The best crab cakes I've ever had were Faidley's at the Lexington Market in Baltimore. And they ship!!

What daydreamin said.

I'm a Maryland native & the stepdaughter of a crabber from a multi-generation family of Chesapeake watermen. Nobody's crabcakes are better than Faidley's jumbo lump crabcakes (well, maybe my mother's, but even that's questionable). I have it on good authority that Mr. Zagat (of the Zagat Survey) orders them for personal consumption. I've taken them as gifts to crabcake-loving friends from East to West --& Faidley's promply gets a new customer. Expensive, yes. Worth every penny -- no question.

Let me second kraen's reply. Harris' at Kent Narrows is mediocre at best. So is Fisherman's Inn at Kent Narrows. The only redeeming feature of Harris' is that it is next door to Red Eyes Dock Bar, home to the Summer Sunday wet tee-shirt contest.

This is an awesome thread that has been going for a long time. My mother is always in the market for the "best crabcake" and rarely is she satisfied. Again, as I mentioned before, The Robert Morris Inn was a winner, but last Fall, we did find beautiful, non-filler, lump crabmeat perfection in Annapolis at Carroll's Creek over in Eastport. Unbelievable.
Plus, the view of the harbor from this restaurant is great - especially if you are seated out on their deck in Summer.
My mouth, too, is watering!

G&M's are great in Linthicum (not far from the airport). You can even get them mailorder. Here is their website to see what they look like.

Gosh, I scrolled up and down, but never found the very best:
Mom and Dad's dock X the bridge from Chestertown - we took 3 doz legals a day and made crab imperial and crab cakes every day in the mid 70's.

Boy, do I agree with the idea of doing it all oneself! It really can't get any better than that. But, in actually making the crabcakes, I just always have a hard time picking the crabs and not having a major portion go directly into my mouth instead of the bowl!!
Makes me want to hop in the car and drive to Harris's right now...a dozen jumbos and a pitcher of beer. SIGH.

Just returned from a trip to Baltimore. After reading this thread, I went to the Lexington Market and had the crabcake at Faidley's. It was great! There was an area where you could stand at counters and eat. A fun experience. Also had crabcakes at Legal Seafood which quite good.

While visiting relatives outside of Baltimore this weekend (before heading down to Bethesda), was looking forward to crabcakes in Annapolis, but it's Naval Academy graduation this weekend, so think we'll pass.

Sounds like Faidley's might be the place to go instead!

Glad to see this at the top again! I am making my crab cakes tonight (see recipe above) w/lump crab on sale from Giant (our grocery store) and I have a glass of white wine ready too. And first the soft shell crabs of the season will be out at my Giant at 11 am tomorrow morning (thanks to my Giant seafood man for that tip; I'll be there at 11).

Ah, the joys of summer.

I would agree that the crab cakes at Faidley's (Lexington Market) are quite good.

My husband and I like Washington Square Pub (Easton, Md.) for crab cakes, too.

The ones at Obrycki's (1 block from our house in Upper Fells Point) are too salty, in my opinion.

Emd,
If you are ever driving around over here in the Shenandoah Valley, try the Irish Isle restaurant on route 11 in Middletown (off I-81) for their crabcakes. Better than we had in Charleston and they use very little filling. They are just south of the Route 11 Potato Chip factory.

Well, I need to update my response since I last wrote. G & M in Linthicum is THE BEST crabcake in the area- yes, better than Hellas. Although for those in Annapolis, Hellas is closer.
G&M can be ordered online for home shipping too!

Not at all roadfood, but the Oceanaire Seafood Room downtown does a good a job with crabcakes as I have ever tasted.

I guess I'm in a real minority but I don't like the G&M's crabcakes--seem to have too much shredded carb when I've had them. But I'm definitely with those who voted for Jerry's in Lanham--just had one last fall and it was outstanding!

Hella's hands down is the best. They have the best mozarella sticks too. I'm lucky enough to live down the street from Hellas. I implore everyone if you are ever in this area (severna park, glenburnie, arnold, even baltimore.. its not that far) to stop into hellas if you are looking for a good crabcake. they have excellent gyros as well.

The Edgewater Inn in Edgewater, close to Annapolis, was voted number #1 for their crab cakes last year.

Sadly, Rock Hall is not a sleeply fishing village anymore.
