best continental USA beach
Help-- I am looking for a wonderful turqouise ocean with white sands in continental USA. I am traveling in June and dislike crowds and children..does this place exist? I also would like to have an ocean front room .....

My sister and I really enjoyed our stay in a beachfront room on Anna Maria Island at Bungalow Beach Resort. It fulfills your desire for white sand. The water isn't exactly turquoise, but since it is gulfside it is less choppy than oceanside. My sister swam in it hours every day. Bungalow Beach is a small family run resort reminiscent of old Florida. To read my trip report, type "Bungalow Beach Resort" into the Fodors search window and click on Florida. It is entitled: "Sarasota/Anna Maria Island Trip Report"
The website for the resort is:

Just a little south of Anna Maria Island there is a little paradise called Siesta Key. It has the whitest, softest sand in the entire continental US. Warm Gulf water, not exactly turquoise, but calm and clean, perfect for swimming or just floating around for hours. There are some families and some crowds, but there are many, many stretches of the beach were you will find solitude and quiet. The entire length of the island is an open beach, as we don't have private beaches. So it's possible to walk for miles from the south end to the north end.

I've been to many beaches across this beautiful country and I agree with Maggi. Siesta Key may be as good as it gets. If you go, I recommend that you drive down to Naples as well. This beach has a "non US" flavor. It appears more tropical than the vast majority of US beaches.
SanDestin near Destin, FL is another destination with an outstanding beach. The sugar-white sand and torqouise water is absolutely beautiful. (This place is not too far from Panama City, but much more upscale). If you go, check out Baytowne Wharf.

Padre Island on the coast of south Texas is a National breaker island santuary with a hundred miles of wide white sand beaches and dunes with hardly a person for many miles in some areas. Both ends of the island have ocean front hotels.
