Best Breakfast in Los Angeles

Yes, I know the term "best" is subjective but we are staying at the Waldorf at 9850 Wilshire in early April. I often book rooms with inclusive breakfasts but decided not to for this trip. We will probably be up early every day to do the various museums, etc. We will have a car.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated and thank you

It's not exclusively a breakfast spot, but Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles is a favorite of mine. There are several in the LA region.

It's more than subjective. It depends on what you want. Traditional breakfast (eggs/omelets, pancakes, etc.) or more brunchy options (avocado or ricotta toast, smoked fish and egg sandwich, great bread and pastries, ham/steak)? Ethnic (breakfast burritos or pizzas, polenta and eggs, chilaquiles, tortas de huevos with or without menudo, kimchi fried rice or juk, lox and bagels, grits and catfish, chicken and waffles, etc. etc.)? Nice atmosphere/architecture/view or local "dive"?

I don't agree with all of the restaurants listed in this link, but it does give you an idea of the variety in food and geography.

Another list for weekend breakfast.

I would focus on the geography of your sightseeing and then look for a spot that's along the way.

I'll be interested to hear your reaction to the Waldorf Astoria.

Oh wow, where to start...

Old timey -

- Nate 'n Al's in BH for good brekkies and decent Hollywood-types spotting (older generation; Larry King is a regular.) https://natenal.com/

- Du-Pars in the Farmers Market. http://www.dupars.net/Store/

- Nearby the Farmers Market, Canter's, 24h. Los Angeles Deli Restaurant - Canters Deli

- Norm's on La Cienega - https://normsrestaurants.com/locatio...ms-la-cienega/

Not super old, but consistently gets my vote - Martha's on 22nd in Hermosa Beach (no website but has a FB page.) Fabulous breakfasts steps from the Strand, the beachfront pedestrian/bike street. Load up on one of Martha's omelets, then walk off the carbs along the Strand while you decide what bank to rob so you can move there. Worth the drive.

LOL, I should have KNOWN this kind of thing would happen. and I suppose grits are "ethnic" to some folks. I agree that focusing on the geography makes the most sense and I am familiar with Roscoe's.

The only Waldorf I have stayed in recently was the Berlin, Germany, location which worked perfectly for us; I wish I could duplicate the views in that hotel.

That IS a tall order! Obviously Sunday Brunch is a different story, but as you are close to Century City, John O'Groats on Pico, just west of Patricia, is a great option, with huge lines at the weekend, but easy (ish) weekdays. Tuscan Son, which opened earlier this year on Santa Monica at Overland (across from the Mormon Temple), is supposed to be outstanding and they make their own breads. An Italian take on breakfast.

Du-Pars as Gardyloo recommends, also Pann's, John O'Groats and the Original Pantry. Marty's Hamburger Stand or chili dogs from Carney's (which the Mrs. always nixes for breakfast lol).

I love the Farmers Market. DuPars, in my opinion, is not very good. Quite overrated in my book. From my website review: "Speaking of “Gas-a-teria,” it was time for breakfast and, although I have never been a fan of this place, we decided to try the famed Du-Pars for breakfast. As usual, it lived down to all our expectations. Du-Pars has been here as long as I remember, and if you go to the Farmers Market, I highly recommend you find somewhere else to eat. Outside of bad food and pretty terrible service the meal was fine. The eggs were inedible, the toast was not toasted and the bacon was severely undercooked (a true triple threat). My pancakes were fine, but did not live up to their boast of the “best pancakes on earth” or “best pancakes in the world” or whatever their over-hyped slogan was. They should stop by my house some day and they might rethink that motto. On the plus side, you do receive a free souvenir menu that harkens back to the days when bacon & eggs cost 50 cents and pancakes were 40 cents. Come to think of it, that’s exactly what our breakfast was worth." And I was in a good mood.

We loved our breakfast (and dinner another time) at Manuela in L.A.'s Art District. Our favorite breakfast in L.A.

yummy, and you can walk there. Nothing like weekday morning LA traffic to kill your breakfast appetite

I agree with maitaitom about DuPar's.

Can't stand the Original Pantry.

I live near Martha's in Hermosa Beach. Sadly, I don't think it's as good as it once was, but it does have a great location steps from the sand. Weekend parking can be impossible, esp. if it's beach weather. I eat lunch at Nate 'n' Al's in Beverly Hills fairly often and John O'Groats on Pico once in a while. Neither would make my Top 10 in L.A., but I guess it depends on what you're looking for. Celebrity sightings are not my thing. The owners of Nate 'n' Al's sold their building, and the deli will be moving, although the date and new location haven't been announced. It definitely won't be the same after it moves. Maybe that's a reason to go now/soon.

There are vendors in the Grand Central Market that I love if you're going to DTLA. Eggslut and Jose Chiquito for breakfast, several others for any time of day: Wexler's Deli, Bento Ya, Kismet Falafel, Lucky Bird, Sari Sari (Filipino), Sticky Rice (Thai) and several vendors serving dishes from various regions of Mexico. All dining at the GCM is casual/no table service.

At the other end of the scale, Sunday brunch on the terrace at the Bel Air Hotel.

For oceanside dining, I think Nelson's at the Terranea Resort is as good as it gets (whale and dolphin watching, beautiful property), but that would likely be a HUGE detour from your plans.

My favorite Nate 'in Al's story. In the 70s, my best friend (he still is) and I were at Nate 'n' Als. There had been a comedy special special on TV the night before. We both were breaking up over a joke we heard on the special. Two seconds later, a a guy peers over the partition and says, "I wrote that joke." That guy was Milton Berle. Just another L.A. story. Kinda fun to grow up here.

I appreciate the time everyone took to answer this question. Unfortunately, I have to apologize for my choice of words in terms of "the best." How would anyone know if a place is actually "the best" unless they had eaten at every single breakfast place in town?

No need to apologize Dukey1, best is subjective to the one answering the question. I favor old time, greasy places myself. Whenever I helpfully suggest cheeseburgers for breakfast, my wife shoots me these looks.

Dukey1, I know your OP was about breakfast, but you might want to peruse the just-released Los Angeles Times "101 Restaurants We Love."

These places would be a drive, and are pricey, but they offer a great view:
