Bingo! Private room with 2 twin beds, $75-90 at the hostel Tab links to. Shared bathrooms.
Tab, thanks so much, I really enjoyed looking at the photos, which make it look awesome--cheerful, clean, bright. It's the old Fort Mason buildings, spiffed up just a tad. Minimalist, shall we say, but the grounds are gorgeous!

I should add, we have stayed on the grounds of DLI in Monterey and at embassy guesthouse in a few cities in Europe and so are used to institutional settings gussied up ever so slightly for paying guests. I wouldn't love sharing a bathroom on a vacation, but if doing so were the only I could afford the vacation, I'd give it a go, fwiw.

OP says in second post a private bathroom, not sure if shared bath is a deal breaker.
We also have no idea what time of year she is wanting to visit.January prices could be lower, maybe at TheMosser.com but again, we don't have full info to be of best help.

Thanks for all your comments & suggestions. I think I will have to consider upgrading my per/night accommodation from $50-$90/night to $100/night. I would just want a place, if only possible, where street walking is not much of an uphill climb. We're from the Philippines and we're planning the trip this Sept. 18-28 just for SF and the rest of the 6 days (Sept.9-Oct 4) elsewhere, say LA & LVegas to visit relatives & friends.

Uh oh. That is PRIME season in SF. Even the Mosser (great location, flat area, close to everything) is $150 a night ($175 with tax) and that is a queen with shared bath. Those rooms have a sink and there are several hall bathrooms and are kept VeRY clean several times a day by staff.
Again, you may have to lower the number of days in San Francisco to be able to get a place that is decent.

Just a thought: Check nearby suburbs for a room. CalTrain runs into SF as does BART. You may be able to find something on the BART line that is cheaper than staying in the City. I do agree with the rest of the posters.....$100 per night in a good area of SF is probably out of the question.

Even on Hotwire (an anonymous booking site, where you don't know the specific hotel before you book), you won't find anything under $100 for your dates other than a few 1* and 2* hotels near SFO or Oakland Airport.
