Beresford Arms Hotel, San Francisco...thoughts?

I went to Tripadvisor but I thought I'd check in with Fodorites as well. How is the Hotel Beresford? Noisy? Close to Union Square? I don't have to be right on Union Square but I don't want to get caught in a seedy neighborhood.

Are you calling my neighborhood seedy? Location-wise it's good, I would stay there. Just don't walk Taylor alone

As for noise, if you can get a room not overlooking Sutter you should be fine.

(Sutter between Mason and Taylor)

Is it better than the Hotel Carlton? Closer to Union Square?

I didn't know that was your 'hood, Faina!

I live across from Carlton, this is mostly residential (read: boring) area. Beresford's location is more in the middle of everything.

But if you choose Carlton, you can wave to me from your hotel window, think about it

Hotel Rex gets rave reviews here, and location is perfect. Don't know about the prices though.

A good friend of mine used to stay at the Beresford on all his visits to San Francisco. We visited the bar area a few months ago when visiting the area from San Jose. It has a quaint "English flair" in the bar....THE WHITE HORSE TAVERN. The hotel is an easy walk to Union Square.

If you are a veteran of any military service I highly recomment the MARINE MEMORIAL HOTEL. Great rooms, free buffet breakfast, free happy hour and less expensive parking for around $149.00 per night. You have to buy a membership for $100 per year. It is a few steps from the Beresford Hotel. Check it out on their website. One of the best deals going for a hotel in San Francisco.

Melissa-When are you coming to SF? Is Faina going to have to plan another GTG?

Yeah, this time invitational, at my house, I'm cooking, and you'll eat and drink what's served, and no arguments over who's paying

We had a girls weekend in San Francisco last October and stayed at the Hotel Beresford in 2 rooms. I would stay there again, the rooms were decent size, clean and the breakfast was pretty good. We had rooms that faced Sutter and were a tad bit noisy. I would suggest getting a room in the back. Also, they had free internet. The White Horse Tavern was fun and very convenient for some of us that just wanted to have a few drinks before going up to our room after a day in San Francisco. It was close to Union Square and it was a convenient location.
