I liked what newyorker said-just like giving up your seat at a restaurant. Jim-you are ignorant for being so stereotypical. My pet peeve is people kicking my seat! I have such a phobia now I have to sit in the back row, or I will move if someone sits behind me. I got in a fight once at a theatre because some chick wouldn't stop kicking my seat. She knew it was annoying me and told me to move so she could put her feet up. I refused, and she ended kicking my seat so hard I flew off. That's worse that having a bad seat!

As much as I really hate to agree with Jim on this one, he's right. I live in a downtown area which is majority black and I drive to the 'burbs to see movies because black kids will talk/shout/scream throughout the movie. To them, this is part of going to see the flick. To me, it's annoying as hell!

Ms OT:
Why must you be so childish much of the time?
Read the notes accurately.
I stated that the 'ignoramuses' are those who talk and create disturbances in the theater. YOU called yourself an ignoramus, not me.
I specifically stated that where I live there is no problem telling people's races by listening to them. And you can. Most of the Hispanics and blacks at theaters where I attend movies are easily distinguished if you close your eyes and listen. And the real point is that I can recall several times being tempted to "shush" someone who proved to be a young black person (and, on a couple occasions, I too have been annoyed by the older hard of hearing person who doesn't 'get' what's going on).
Why is it that everyone who doesn't agree with you gets these immature, vitriolic retorts?

Ok Karen. Your right!
Now kiss my...

Now, does that meet your INTERNET posting standards of behavior and conversation protocol?

To all of you intelligent bigots, you will know if you are one...go see the movie Baby Boy. You ought to get self fulfilling prophecies up the backside.

Be sure and report more of your scientific research about "those" behaviors on THESE TRAVEL THREADS.

Better yet use your search engine and go to the thousands of sites that are waaaaaaaayyyyy ahead of you in terms of how "Blacks" behave.

Posters on the Europe Thread said it would take a few months before I would no longer stomach the intellect of some on the USA threads. They are SO right.

This takes the cake. However THIS is the USA that MANY have unfortunately come to know. Truly one of the most racist destinations around.

I am not condemming all but, I have had more than enough. Sad, really sad.

In my experiences I'm afraid I'll have to agree with Karen and Jim.
OT, I'm sure it's not like this everywhere, but note that I've said "in my experiences". Seems that Karen and Jim and others have had similar experiences too.

First, let me say that I am an African American male in the SF Bay Area. And yes, many of our teenagers DO talk throughout movies. Not all, of course, but many. I have found this to be quite amusing if the movie is bad as the audience actually makes it funny. When I want to actually watch a movie I do like Earl does and I head to the suburbs. I can't tell you WHY some people talk during movies but I do not find it racist to say that it exists.

Oaktown - it'll be a while before Baby Boy makes it over here, is it another notch up from Boyz 'n the Hood? I cannot wait.

'Fraid Jim is right about young urban blacks in movies. Anyone who's gone to a movie in the inner city or on a military base knows that you have to sit through loud, runnning commentary at a movie attended by young black males. It's just part of the urban culture. (By the way, I'm black.) In the military, it's common to have an officer on duty at movies just to walk around to tell the talkers to shut up.

Excuse me, but teenagers talk in movies - white, black, purple. Why is everyone acting like white teens don't talk and cause a disturbance? Don't even think to tell me when you people drive to the suburbs that there are no teens disrupting the movie.

Glad that people are telling what they actually think is the truth without a lot of namecalling by the sanctimonious. One is not a racist when one notices that young blacks talk a lot during movies. An inordinate amount of white males get drunk at hockey games and cause fights. When I used to go to Washington Caps games, you always had to watch for drunk Philadelphia Flyers fans looking for a "go". Same goes for Pittsburgh Penguin fans.

Oaktown,

You need to chill. Your complexes are screaming louder than you are! Take a lesson from Adam and try to view it objectively. Frankly, whether it's black kids or white carrying on, their prime goal and grandest delight is in irritating the adults in the audience, black or white, and they've obviously succeeded.

Excellent point, Paul.
(Please note, Oaktown Traveler).
My comments are not meant to be 'racist' in the sense of being derisive of a particular race.
Hockey games are an excellent example. The young 'tough' white kids are an embarrassment IMO, but then, most everyone who goes to hocket games expects this behavior.
I'm not going to get into NASCAR or WWF or Limp Bizkit audiences...you get the picture.
But I expect unpalatable behavior at those scenes. I expect (and have paid for) peace and quiet at the theater.

For heaven's sake. Certain young people like to misbehave during movies. They come in all races. I live in the white burbs, and I can tell you white teens can be just as loud and rowdy. The only predictors seem to be maturity and class, and no race has a monopoly on those traits.

Karen, I'm surpised to hear you can reliably determine a person's race just by listening to them. If you heard me speak, I doubt you'd know my race until you saw me, so there goes your theory, I guess.

Adam, if you're really African American, I'm surprised to hear that you find the stereotyping about African Americans on this thread acceptable. You really should be offended. You know, you'd have a lot of trouble getting a cab in a lot of places due to this sort of stereotyping. Guess some people have to learn about these things the hard way.

For heavens sake Cindy, where do you get off by telling Adam he should be offended?? You're right that any color teens can be loud during movies, but Adam acknowledged there seems to be a problem with young black males, so you take it upon yourself to tell him to be offended??
P.S.: your theory about not being able to tell someone's race by hearing them speak is only half right . . . it's actually very easy to distinguish the race of part of the population, black and white.

Where do I get off advising Adam to think again? Um, well, let's see. If Adam wants to sign on to racist comments, he is free to do so. If I think he has another think coming, I am free to tell him so. So, then, where do you get off?

In my job, I speak to people over the telephone before meeting them in person. Although I don't automatically assume that I "know" their race, I can predict with about 99% accuracy whether the person is Black, Asian, or Hispanic by their voice. Does that make me racist?

WARNING!WARNING!WARNING, Wil Robinson and other earthlings. When you do not conform to ilisa's pure liberal sensibilities, she gets REAL upset. Cindy seems to be a neo-ilisa clone. WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!
