Beautiful beach near Fort Myers? - help me out of this golf community

I'm staying in my mother's gated golf community condo this week so I could get a little Florida sun. The people are wonderful - it's very friendly, but I'd like to see the Gulf and some nature that isn't placed, groomed and pruned. I have a car and was thinking of taking a little drive to Sanibel. Or should I go to Fort Myers Beach?

I'm 33, travelling solo, looking for a beach to nap on in the sun and beautiful things to photograph. Suggestions?

Thanks, all.

I'd suggest Boca Grande if you want some "real" Gulf coast nature. I wasn't quite sure where you are staying but I think it's doable from Ft. Myers.

Johnston's State park just south of FTMyers Beach is one very nice beach. Alternitively, you can drive north (about an hour) to Venice and go to the beach past the little airport. There are lots of fossil shark teeth to hunt for there and parking near a fishing pier if that floats your boat. Or out on Sanibel, try Bowman's beach or the lighthouse beach or the beach at blind pass.

Haven't been there in a long time, but Bowman's sure sounds about right. Ft. Myers Beach itself is NOT the answer.

Go to Sanibel as suggested or drive up to the north end of Captiva (takes about half an hour). There is a wonderful beach with parking at the very top of end of the island near South Seas Island Resort. When you arrive at Sanibel there is an information office and you can get a map showing the 4 or 5 public beachers.

Boca Grande is a view of what FL was like 60 years ago. You can find beach areas with no one on them for miles. The downtown square is quaint. With several great restaurants. Loose Caboose for casual outdoor lunch and homemade ice cream.

Seconding and thirding other replies. Sanibel is nice, likewise Captiva. Boca Grande is beautiful, but harder to get to. Most importantly, avoid Ft Myers Beach At All Costs!!
