We stayed in a wonderful B and B in Bar Harbor a few years ago. It's called Canterbury Cottage and it is centrally located. The owner, Martha, is wonderful.
I have not read all the responses but you must go to Acadia National Park. It is beautiful.
Good luck and have fun.

No bramsole, August will be warmer. In fact, August could have a hot, muggy heat wave when guests complain about the lack of airconditioning at many seaside B&Bs. September is generally the most pleasant weather of the year with day temps on the coast around 70 and nights cool and enjoyable. Best is that mosquitoes, kids and crowds will be hibernating by then. Whale Watching goes til mid-October.

Acadia Night Sky Festival is Sept 10 - 14 this year! Enjoy!

Wow! Clark, being from the south, I sure don't want hot and muggy. That and the Arcadia Night Sky Festival makes Sept. perfect.
We are planning on staying at The Inn at Bay Ledge, so that will be close by.

Auguust on Cape Cod is jam packed, a lot of traffic. September, however, is uncrowded and beautiful.

Great choice, choosing The Inn at Bay Ledge and Acadia in September. It is a wonderful property. The crowds and rates drop off quickly and Portland is a great food city! Your days will be filled.

Given the clear title and intent of this thread, I don't know why there is a conversation about Cape Cod. Clearly you had narrowed down your choices. The Mystic and Stonington area of CT is wonderful, as is Watch Hill, RI, but I think Maine as your destination will give you far more bang for your buck! And September really is the most magical time of the year with usually warm days and cool nights and few crowds.
