Okay, here's the challenge. I would love to go to a traditional lobster pound but my dear husband is allergic to shellfish! Is there an option in the Bar Harbor area that serves something that he can eat? We can always go to a regular restaurant so I can have my lobster fix but I was curious if there were any more rustic options that might also serve fish, which he would like.

Abel's Lobster Pound is the best! And yes, they serve fish and other stuff like clams.

DH & I still recall that meal - and we've eaten a lot of lobster...LOL!

Hi. Most lobster pounds will have non-shellfish items on the menu- although I don't know about fin fish. Thurston's in Bernard on Bass Harbor on the quiet (westerly) side of the Island would be a great option - nice view across the harbor, too. Stop by the Lighthouse on your way or hike through Wonderland or Ship Harbor Nature Trail. Have a nice vacation.

Most places will have something else on the menu, but it depends on what you mean by a "traditional lobster pound." Abel's is indeed a great place with a long history. But unlike the open air places like the Trenton Bridge place just before the causeway to MDI, Abel's is pretty upscale. Not like a Manhattan 4-star place, but it is pricey and gets a decidedly 'old money' clientele from the old homes in Northeast Harbor, etc. We went there with kids while camping, on a rainey night. It was great, but most people in the diningroom were wearing sports coats! However, it is traditional in the sense that they cook the lobsters outside and have a tank, etc. You can go down to the cooking area and talk to the guys about how they're doing things and they're really nice.

You can always stop at Trenton Bridge on the way in and check out their menu. Enjoy!
