Baltimore apartments

A friend will be starting a job at Univ of Baltimore and is looking for apartments. What are the good/bad neighborhoods in Baltimore?

Some of the areas southwest of the city like Brooklyn and Brooklyn Park would not be high on my list. Federal Hill is a good area although it's pretty pricey and the Towson area is very popular with mid 20's.

Federal Hill is lovely, but very expensive. The south Baltimore area of Locust Point is starting to get hip. You can still find reasonable rental prices on small row houses. It is a mix of old-time Baltimore residents and young professionals (I'm related to both!)

The area around Hopkins/Loyola has some okay places to live (Charles Village). Bolton Hill is nice, too.

Your friend should check with the housing office at the school. Often they will have special relationships with apartment companies in the area: http://www.housing.umaryland.edu/commercial.cfm

For walking to work, the Mount Vernon area is good. Not 100% safe, but lively nightlife and lots of apartments.

Blue collar but relatively safe: Hampden and Remmington (both are near Hopkins).

Hip and pricey: Federal Hill and Canton.

Some reasonably-priced apartments can be found to the north of Hopkins in the beautiful, mostly-upscale, mansion-filled neighborhood of Roland Park. (I had an apartment in one of the mansions for a while.)

If your friend doesn't mind a bit of a commute: north of the city in Towson, Timonium, and Cockeysville.

Beware of the neighborhood to the east of Loyola College, along the York Road corridor in the City. Not at all safe!
