Back from Grand Canyon, Page, Sedona

I just wanted to thank everyone who helped plan our trip. It is my turn to help out someone else. Will be glad to answer any questions.
Day 1 - Sightseeing at the Grand Canyon using the free shuttle.
Day 2 - Page, AZ - Toured Antelope Canyon and went to Horsehoe Bend lookout
Day 3 - Page, AZ - Float Trip - This was the highlight of my trip!
Day 4 - Sedona - Hot air balloon ride and Pink Jeep Broken Arrow tour at sunset
Day 5 - Verde Canyon Railroad - very scenic. First class cars are worth it--you have access to open air and air conditioned cars.
Day 6 - Sightseeing around Sedona
If I could do it over again, I would add another day to Page and take the Rainbow Bridge boat tour.

Thanks Karen. I have a few questions as I'm also planning a trip there.

I too would like to hear more about the float trip. How long was it? Where does it start/end. Good for 10 and 13 year olds? Do they have a website or phone number for reservations?

Antelope Canyon; I could've sworn I read that you need permission to go there. Is that true? If so, who do you go to for entrance, and how do you go about doing this? Do you have to arrange this ahead of time? It looks amzing in photo's that I've seen.

How far (In driving time) was Antelope Canyon from Page? Any recommendations for lodging in Page or Sedona?

Thank you!

My husband and I will be traveling to Vegas/Grand Canyon/Sedona early next month. Can anyone recommend some easy hikes and low-impact activities in GC (South Rim) and Sedona? I will be about 20 weeks pregnant and although I'm usually pretty active, I don't want to overdo it. We still want to enjoy the scenery and outdoors as much as possible. Also, what is the town of Page like? I'm interested in hearing more about Antelope Canyon. How far from GC - I'm not familiar with it. Thanks!

I was in Sedona early this summer, and while the hiking was limited due to fire danger then, one area I enjoyed was Red Rock State Park. There were trails of various difficuties, some great views and others that followed along Oak Creek.

As for Page and Antelope Canyon, I found the town of Page to be rather inconsequential - a main drag of strip malls, chain hotels, and mediocre restaurants. The draws are the proximity to Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon. Antelope Canyon is just outside of town, and you must go by guided tours, there are several companies offering them.

I did the half day Rainbow Bridge tour - the Bridge is very impressive, but the trip there and back is quite long with very uncomfortable seats. If I were planning my trip over again, I would probably rent a small craft and try the trip on my own - that way I could have gone for a dip in the lake along the way. It gets quite hot if you sit on the top deck of the boat, and the beautiful water of the lake looks so refreshing, but you can't swim off the tour boat.

I stayed at one of the Best Westerns in Page, which was perfectly fine, but I ate one night at Wahweap Lodge, right in the park on Lake Powell, and would probably stay there if I ever returned. It's a great location, the restaurant was decent, although a bit pricey, and the swimming pools at the lodge looked really nice.

Also, I booked my reservations for Antelope Canyon and Rainbow Bridge through the John Wesley Powell Museum in Page. You can do it on their website, it doesn't cost you any extra, and a portion of the proceeds goes to the museum. A worthy cause I suppose, and the museum was extremely helpful in booking, directions, etc.

To Lori,

There are plenty of easy walking paths along the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Easy and beautiful. You can also ride the free shuttles and stop to see other overlooks. Plenty to do with out over doing it. November might be chilly so come prepared.

Page, AZ is a nice normal city with a lot of tourist accommodations. Motels, nice restaurants, fast food, grocery stores, Wal-Mart, gas stations, schools, golf course, etc. and this fantastic view of Lake Powell.

Sorry for the delay--I was having some computer problems.

I reserved the float trip through the Page Chamber of Commerce (928) 645-2741. They can also reserve tours for the Antelope Canyon. You can request them to send you information on the different tours they can reserve.

I believe only one company does the float trips. There were a couple of kids (8-13 yrs)on our float trip and I think they enjoyed it. Many people ordered bag lunch from the Waheep Lodge--we just took a couple of snacks. Wear a hat and use sunscreen on the float trip.

We took a tour through the Antelope Canyon with Overland Tours--we were quite pleased with them. Take plenty of film for Antelope canyon. It is best to go there mid-day when the sun is shinning through the top. Keep an eye on the weather also--the canyon can flood quickly. Antelope canyon is where they film the Prilosec and Nexium commercials. I saw it in some brochures and just wanted to see it in person. There were no kids on this tour with us--I am not sure how much kids would enjoy this.

Hot Air Balloon Ride was with Red Rock Balloon Adventures (800-258-3754). We flew right over the red rocks at sunrise--beautiful! The other baloons appeared to fly over more of a foresty area. Don't be afraid! When you are in the air--you feel like you are standing still.

Pink Jeep (800-873-3662) we took their last Broken Arrow tour of the day. I guess take into consideration the time of year you go. It would have been quite hot mid-day in Sedona in September.

Verde Canyon RR (800-293-7245) this is 4 hour train ride with nice scenery. Younger kids may get board after a couple of hours. My husband and I really enjoyed this.

At sunset go to Airport Road in Sedona--we happened to catch a rainbow our last night there!

I was pleased with all the hotels we stayed--I just need a clean place to stay. We stayed at: Holiday Inn Express, Grand Canyon 928-638-3000 which is actually in Tusayan just outside of the Park; Holiday Inn Express, Page 928-645-9000, Best Western Inn of Sedona 928-282-3072 (request a 3rd floor facing the rocks). This Best Western was just outside of town. There is another Best Western in town.

Whatever you plan, I am sure you will all have a wonderful time. Hope this helps! Any more questions, let me know.

We also stayed at that best Western outside of town and really enjoyed the loction. nothing fancy mind you but the view every morning and evening was an especially nice bonus.

Lorie:
As far as hiking, we too were limited by the fires and therefore stopped at a ranger station to get the most up to date info. They were very helpful and could probably give you the best info regarding the relative ease or difficulty of the trails.
We really liked the ruins at Palatki. Petroglyphs and pictographs and guides there to explain it all. A bit of a ride out but worth it.
To All:
Enjoy, we can't wait to go back!

We were in Page this summer with my 13yr old and 16 yr old. The Antelope Canyon tour at noon was one of the highlights of a 10 day trip (GC,Sedona,Bryce,Zion). We went with Roger Ekis Tour(www.visitlakepowell.com). Also an absolute MUST if you're in Page is the short hike to Horseshoe Bend for an incredible view. It is not marked anywhere (1 mile outside of Page) so ask locals how to get there. It's on the side of the road off rt 89 - pull over and walk 3/4 mile. I took the most amazing photos!
We also rented a motor boat on Lake Powell, but as inexperienced boaters, we never made it to Rainbow Bridge. It was fun though to go in and out of the canyons and swim off the boat whenever we felt hot. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!
