Avoiding Mardi Gras

I'm planning a trip to New Orleans in late January or early February. This year Mardi Gras falls on February 13th. I was wondering when I should be sure to leave to miss the festivities (saw them once, long ago) and the price gouging (paid it then, and literally saw prices being marked down afterwards). Appreciate the help.

I would leave before the weekend before Mardi Gras. So around the 1st of February. Can't guarantee that there will be no price gouging and there probably will be some smaller festivities but the two weekends leading up to Mardi Gras are the biggest weekends.

Thanks. We'll be gone well before the festivities.

FYI: the Amtrak "City of New Orleans" leaves the station that is next to the Super dome at 1:45PM every day. Coach fare to Memphis is only $50.

Funny you mention that, Tom! Our plan is to reach New Orleans by train from DC, then after a few days train to Tucson, see a few friends, then train to L.A. and fly home after a visit. It will be our first overnight train since a long-ago trip in Spain. Any tips you may have welcome!

Any chance you have time to visit the area around Eunice? For music???

Saturday mornings at Fred's Lounge in Mamou.....one of the best travel experiences I've had....

You could rent a car inn NOLA and go there for an overnight, if you can be there on Saturday.

Maybe this planning thread will help..I cannot find my trip report here..

CAJUN region, plus NEW ORLEANS
