Aussies looking for hotel in Chicago

Flying into Chicago in June for four days need a reasonable hotel in a convenient area. Chicago appears to be absolutely huge and I don't know where the best area is to stay. Any recommendations? We would appreciate your assistance. PS We are not rich!

First how many of you are there?? If you are a family or a group of 2 couples something like Embassy Suites may be most economical.

You want to stay either in what is knows "The Loop", the area bordered by the elevated train tracks and includes the Art Institute or near upper Michigan Ave. near all the shops.

Also price range would be helpful.
There is a well-located property at 162 E Ontario St which is used to be a Motel 6, but now seems to be a Red Roof Inn, but I have heard complaints about its cleanliness.

There is also Hotel Cass -- but it is bottom budget for sure.

If you are a couple you want to look for discount rates at some of the big chains. Day's Inn Gold Coast is on Lake Michigan -- it is showing a rate of 129 USD for nights in June. There is a the Congress Plaza in the Loop area also on Lake Michigan showing 127 USD.

A lot of large conventions are staged in June in Chicago. Depending on your dates, you may be able to get a discount room through hotrooms.com or something similar. The North Michigan Avenue area is the most desirable, but the Downtown/Loop or Lincoln Park areas also have a lot to offer, including good public transportation. The close-in suburbs, such as Evanston and Oak Park, are charming, but quiet, and a 30-40 minute train trip from downtown. If you want more help from locals, we'll need to know what your dates and price range are.

I meant to mention that my winning bid at the Hyatt Regency was for $65.00 per night.

Thank you all for your help. Had trouble finding a hotel in June, thought it either a baseball game or conventions. Did get a room at Crowne Plaza Silversmith in the Loop area. Seems to have good reviews. Can't wait to see your beautiful city.

I saw that someone mentioned the Loop. I would suggest you look there as well. You would be close to area attractions and museums. Additionally, since that part of town closes it doors on the weekends, you would be surprised that you can get some good deals at some very nice hotels. Most people think that if the hotel is downtown, it will be expensive. Michigan Avenue, yes.

There are some cool hotels there. The W City Center is awesome and is right by an El stop. I like them the best off all. There is the Hotel Allegro and Hotel Burnham as well, but they are on the pricier side.
