Arizona/Utah trip - any side trip suggestions???
Traveling from Sedona (2 nights), to Grand Canyon North Rim (2 nights) Zion (2 nights) and Lake Powell. Would love to hear from anyone about suggested routes to take or routes to avoid. Would also like to hear about any special stops we should worth making along the way... Thanks everyone!!!!

In the Sedona area is Montezuma's Castle National Monument.
Just north of Flagstaff on Hwy 89 is a turn off for Hwy 395 which loops around thought Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument and back to Hwy 89.
To get to the N. Rim you will take Alt. Hwy 89 to Jacob Lake before taking Hwy 67 down to the N. Rim.
To get to Zion you will go back to Jacob's Lake and continue on Alt. 89 to Fredonia. The quickest and most scenic route is to take Hwy 89 up to Mt. Carmel Jct. and take Hwy 9 into Zion.
You will leave Zion the same way and then take Hwy 89 to Lake Powell.
Since you have so little time in the area and the areas you are visiting are so spectaular I wouldn't worry doing other things.

Utahtea: when we leave the S. rim for the N.rim, will there be any advantage to going the long way on hwy 89 through Page, Kanab, Fredonia and down into Jacob Lake? I realize 89A is much shorter, but time is not a problem if the views are worth the extra driving.

To ronkala,
Staying on Hwy 89 is scenic and the drive up the little pass before Lake Powell, the decend back down to Lake Powell and the drive by the lake is well worth the extra 83 miles. Just be warned that the drive into the N. Rim is slow. Plan on at least 7 1/2 - 8 hours of driving going this route.
If you don't plan on going back this way then I would go.

Thankyou Utahtea, we'll do it since we are not not returning that way. After N.rim it's on to Zion, Bryce and whatever as we work our way up to I-70 east. We'll probably visit Capitol Reef on the way.

There's a good article about Highway 12 on the NY Times web site: http://query.nytimes.com/search/arti...53C1A9649C8B63 . You do have to register, but it's permanent and free.

OK. I just retried that URL, and it worked for me. I suspect it must be tied to registration.
Here's another way: Get to the NY Times site. From the choices along the left edge, down under FEATURES, pick TRAVEL. After getting to the main TRAVEL page, at the very top, you'll see a search box. Type in "highway 12" , and click the arrow just to the right. It will bring up a number of stories (including a great Utah article by Daisann McLane,) and the Highway 12 story should be about the 3rd one down. Put "highway 12" in quotation marks.

Not sure what you already have planned, but consider a Colorado Float trip from Page. It will take you through Horsehshoe Bend which you can also view from above. We went to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and Page. The float trip was the absolute highlight of the trip. Do a search on Page and you will find my trip report from 11/10/2002 Back from Grand Canyon, Page, Sedona. Have a great time, I would go back again in a heartbeat!
