Are we crazy.....Please be honest.

I like to go away for my birthday. This year I chose to go to Captiva....in July.

we had such a great time last month at the Tween Waters Inn, I thought it is a good choice. Now I am having second thoughts due to the heat. Is it really that bad on the Gulf Coast or does the breeze keep it more bearable?
We are just looking to hang out by the beach in the AM, then the pool in the afternoon and off to dinner somewhere not venturing inland.

Thanks

If you do not mind horrendous humidity and heat, then you will be fine.
It will be extremely hot and humid, and the water will also be warm.
We are expecting a very active hurricane season as well, which lasts from June to November.
Don't let all of this deter you if you really want to do this. Part of the fun in life is the adventure. Just wanted you to know what you may be in for before you arrive.

We were on Sanibel the last week in June last year, and we had a wonderful time. Yes, it was hot and humid but the breezes did make it reasonably comfy and I'm very heat-sensitive. I'd go for it ... Just be prepared to jump in the water or stay in the A/C a lot if it's unusually hot!

Thanks for your quick reply.

I know all about huricanes - LOL

There is not much to choose from when you are born in July. We usually go to Vegas for my B'Day, but we got tired of that heat.
We are from Long Island so while it ets hot and humid I know in FL it is multiplied by 1000. Since we are having such a crappy summer here so far (haven't seen the sun too much in a month) I thought this would make up for it!
I forgot to ask...are the bugs that bad too?

Reverse that and lie by the pool in the mornings and hit the beach in the afternoon.

Afternoons by the pool would be miserable.

GoT, my thoughts exactly on the bodies of water and when to enter them (after I'd already hit "post" above.)

You do need your bug spray, Annabel, but as long as we used it, we were fine!

Hey thanks everyone!

That's a good idea about the pool in the AM...Thanks! The only reason why we wind up by the pool in the afternoon is the POOL BAR! I am not a big red meat eater but the burgers at Tween's pool bar are out of control good!

Now I don't feel so bad. I just didn't want to turn 45 looking at the same old stuff.

Don't worry, you can still hit the pool bar by 5PM and sit in the shade.

One last bit, Annabel: remember the part about "in the shade". I find I can last about three hours at the Florida beach when I'm mostly in the shade. About a half hour otherwise! And yes, you still need the sunscreen. Amazing how brown I get, and I never go without the umbrella & sunscreen.

Go for it! I went with 2 girlfriends to Miami last July. We survived. (Actually, we had a blast).

We thought DC was brutal in the summer until we went there.

I tend to travel off season when I can...

That's when we as Floridians traveled to places like that...in the summer, when many of the tourists were gone. (Note "many"...not all are gone). Yes we already lived in FL already so were somewhat used to it, but it wasn't terrible. The only time it felt uncomfortably hot was kayaking in Ding Darling, where there wasn't a breeze to be had amongst the mangroves.

Do the little sea otters still try to run up onto the porch at Canoe & Kayak Restaurant? It was worth eating there just to watch their antics. Happy Birthday and have a wonderful trip.
