Are the Keys All About Relaxing or ...

OK Fodorites,

I could use some advice about the Florida Keys. Honestly Florida has never been at the top of my list. I hate humidity, bugs (because they LOVE me) and flat land.

Interested in incredible scenery, activities for a solo traveler. Not a "resort" type of person at all.

I have the opportunity to do a home exchange in Islamorada, which a good friend just loves. I can lay around on the beach a bit, but would like to find a day sailing tour if anything like that would be available.

What do people do in the Keys? Would the weather mid-April be too humid? I live in a desert climate, but can do some humidity if there is a good breeze.

Totally green here as you can tell. Any clues? Thanks!!

We LOVE the Keys in April. It's not crowded, warm but not sticky. We've already booked our plane tickets for April 2009. The water is great and there are lots of snorkel/dive/sailing outfitters. If you have a chance to do a home exchange in Islamorada go for it.

Take a day and drive down to Key West -- incredible scenery along the way, and Key West itself is a very interesting place to walk around.

Also look at John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo for snorkeling.

We have a vacation home in Islamorada and we just love the Keys. We go several times a year. Be aware however that beach options are very limited in the Keys. There is Anne's beach in Islamorada which is servicable, but not like what you think of when you go to Daytona or SOBE.

Another option is Bahia Honda state park. It's around MM 34 or so, and is on the way to Key West. That is the best beach in all of the Keys.

Good luck.

There's lots to see and do in Key West - Hemingway House, the Mel Fischer Museum, the Conch Train Tour, glass bottom boats, snorkel tours, Mallory Square. I've heard the trip to the Dry Tortugas is a fun day trip, but we haven't tried it yet.
