Might I suggest one "off the beaten path" possibility: The Barnacle, a lovely, affordable B&B on Big Pine Key. (www.thebarnacle.net)
I'm sure others will have suggestions for Key West, but we found the Barnacle to be a quiet, romantic respite from the craziness of Key West. We were there for several days in late April and the weather was perfect. They have a private beach, hammock, and kayaks available. No kids under 16 allowed. You can watch Key Deer browse on the beach and eat breakfast in their beautiful atrium full of tropical plants. Key West is about 1/2 hour drive away. Bahia Honda state park is nearby (arguably the nicest beach in the Keys). The best snorkeling can be had by taking a charter from Big Pine Key to the reefs off Looe Key. The friendly hosts at the Barnacle can tell you all the info about snorkeling, fishing and other activities.

In Key West...
If you like the mornings you can either have a great breakfast at a different place every day or have a great but different breakfast at the same place every day.
You can chill by the pool / small beach in the middle of every day then search out the best happy hours.
You can chill by the pool / small beach in the middle of the day then shop *then* search out another best happy hour.
You can spend an entire day sailing / snorkeling / kayacking / lunching / sangria-ing, then get back in time to search out even more best happy hours.
You can chill by the pool / small beach then head out for an afternoon snorkel / sunset sail / all-the-beer-wine-champaigne you can drink, then get back and start wondering about dinner.
You can eat a great Cuban meal or tapas or just about any kind of grilled or blackened fish or shellfish fresh from the ocean, accompanied by a Key West Sunset Ale.
You can visit a museum, an aquarium, a pirate place, a butterfly museum, take a trolly or "train" ride around the island. Rent bikes or motor-scooters and visit the other side of the island and even see the haunted doll!.
You can spend an entire vacation in Key West, wonder how quickly the time passed, and how much you missed but can do the next time.
Convinced yet. If not, more room for me (us). And it must be affordable since there are usually a lot of people there. April is not a bad time to go, but May is better.
