Anyone know why Las Vegas hotel rates are so high for Jan '04 weekend?
I'm trying to find a decent room rate in Las Vegas the second weekend in January to attend a wedding. There must be a big convention then, as some hotels are already booked solid. Others have room rates in the range of $175 - 250 per night. I figure someone of you Fodorites will be able to shed some light on this. Anyone have a clue?

When the major conventions are in town you're out of luck trying to find low rates. Supply and demand. If you have to go at that time, book a room then keep checking rates as the date approaches. Sometimes they'll drop a bit, you can cancel and rebook at the lower rate.

that and january is typically the start of the high season in lv. your hosts shoudl have thoguth of that when they planned the wedding. you should scout around and find the best prices from the hotel's websites and then make some intelligent bids (check out biddingfortravel.com) on priceline. chances are with the wedding and all you probably are not looking at spending alot of time in the hotel anyway, so if you can find something cheap i'd say take it. a couple of other considerations would be to stay in an off strip property, use your marriott points, for example, or try to double up with someone and split the cost of the room.

While it's not the Ritz, the rooms were recently re-done and they have a free shuttle to the strip (you can walk it if you're game). You should probably book something while the rates are low, since you can always cancel down the line.
Note that on their website, the rate that comes up may look high but it's the total for the entire stay, not "per night".

Thanks for all your help. I had actually thought of the CES but wasn't sure when they were in town.
We will probably use our Hilton Honors points for a free room, but it still leaves all the other relatives looking for a good deal. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.

Another reason for the high room rates is the fact that New Years is on Thursday and many people coming into Las Vegas for New Years will also be staying over the weekend. Most of the hotels have a 3 or 4 night minimum stay around New Years.
