Thanks Everyone,

Melissa cheese was my first inclination also. Thanks for letting me know I could actually take cheese in. I could not find a weblink and the airlines are rarely helpful with that kind of info.

I figured you had the parmesan I rarely see the quality we have here in NYC though even in New Jersey. All of the transport to and from Italy. I just took some down to a sister. It was $5 less a pound in NYC. Mine was also aged and imported.

PS anything new on the chinatown front you want to suggest? This friend has already told me she wants to check out antique stores there. I am thinking I am going to dive for Seafood Kingdom (if that name is correct)but anything you can suggest? I think you told me about the Dungess Crab we all enjoyed on my last trip in 2001.

Do you think the cream cheeses (brie types (although I would choose something more exotic) would hold up on dry ice?

Lissetmac that sounds great perhaps I can call them and they will have everything packed. I can just pick it up on my way out. Again there use to be a great bagel place in honolulu (New York Bagels was the name I think) but we will be 45 minutes away. Would be nice to stroll in with some bagels.

You are all giving me some excellent ideas thanks everyone!

Sarah, neither the black and white cookies nor the bagels will dry up in the plane. From all the great advice you are getting, have you thought about making your own gift basket then shipping it fed ex? All of the ideas sound great!

Don't mean to rain on your parade Sarah, but I'd be really worried about the SMELL of salami or any strong cheese on the airplane.

BTW, my suggestion would be to casually ask your friend if there's anything he/she is hankering for.

I asked her she had no suggestions. She has only been to Asia, CA and NY once as a teen. While she has certaintly explored the great restaurants in Honolulu. I would like to turn her on to some great European foods.

Do you have imported pastas in Hawaii?

gotravel does sound like the thing to do but I think it would be so expensive.

I wanted to get ice cream one time from Lamberts to NYC. It was $100 for 4 pints and next day shipping. Those bagels at HH 2 doz. are $47. with second day shipping might be higher for Hawaii.

I am definately going to pick up the black and whites. To tell you the truth I have wanted to try them myself since that seinfeld episode. Friends have just often commented that they are pretty simple so I have skipped. Looks like I was wrong according to this post.

If you carry the bagels onto the plane, they can smell! This happened to me once. I bought a dozen bagels, wrapped the paper bag up in a plastic bag and carried it onto the plane. I carefully placed my bagels under the seat so they wouldn't get crushed.

Just about the time we hit a major delay and started circling our destination, the smell of onion and everything bagels became overwhelming. The people in my row were eyeing my bag and smacking their lips!! I told them to keep their hands off my bagels! LOL!

Can I bring Squash Island Mom? Funny, I love Squash too I did not know you did not import it. I think veggies are what they give you a hard time over when landing no!

Mexican Pecans I don't think I have ever had. I am sure we have some good Mexican but that is really a west coast specialty. We are better known for our European foods.

Junior's has delicious black & whites. I always pick up a box at their outpost in Grand Central Terminal when I go to visit friends/family who don't live around here. Junior's has the mini-black and whites which are made of exactly the same stuff as the larger ones. They stay good on the plane, and for maybe a week afterwards.

No, you can't bring in produce.

Any cheese and meats would be nice. The only good candy shop we have is Godiva's. They have squash, just very tiny and not as tasty. What about NY wines? Cheesecake is a great idea. Any NY pastry.

Can someone explain what black and whites taste like? I've been to NY, but obviously missed some of the local grinds.

Sarah:

Chocolates are convenient and usually welcome. I would recommend picking up an assortment at Li-Lac (they have a store on Christopher street and a smaller branch in Grand Central), homemade in NY and terrific. On the high-end, try Maison du Chocolat. They have a store on Madison and 78th and one in Rockefeller Center. Very rich and luxurious chocolate and much better than Godiva.

Sarah, in Chinatown I have a couple of favorites. The old Sea Fortune on King St. is now Golden Palace or something like that. For a true Chinese experience, with the cheapest dim sum and rude waitresses, that's the place to go! (I can say that because I am Chinese.) A couple of new places have cropped up that my brother, PakePorkChop, likes but I have not been able to try yet. I also like Mei Sum for dim sum, and Little Village has become a really popular place. In the Chinese Cultural Plaza, I still like Won Kee and the service is attentive. Forum Cafe on the corner is now another restaurant--not so good because they don't speak English too well.

Seafood Village in the Hyatt Hotel (Waikiki) is expensive but my friends all claim that was the best dim sum they ever had.

For more information on eats, go to http://hawaii.rr.com/leisure/reviews...ng/default.htm and check out all his columns. Guess which one is the picture of me!!!

Just went out on a walk and bought 5 Bitish candy bars (kids kind), a package of Frozen Hot Chocolate mix from Serindipity's, Black & White Cookie all of which will go into a Yankee's cap for my friend's 12 year old.

I bought a video "baby Shakepeare" for his 2-3 year old brother. Need something else in the place of candy perhaps a stuffed animal.

I think I will head out now for Chocolate bubka. Bennie do you live in Hawaii just worried about bread drying up on the plane. Seems to always happen to my skin and to my dinner roll. Has your brother brought it on a long flight like that? Will also pick up some Pierre Robert (triple cream brie type), Aged Gooda and a store suggestion. Maybe some salami, imported pasta (Hard for me not to buy the stuff I love).

Now what should I eat on the plane, perhaps that burrito!!!

Melissa I will look for you in the picture. Dim Sum sounds like a great idea. I don't think I have ever tried that even in NYC. Thanks for the reminder. May hit the Hyatt if that is what your friends are saying. Do these friends have a lot of experience with Asian food? Just surprises me that a hotel would beat chinatown.

love that website though. I am looking at the movie directory now. www.apple.com/trailers and you can see trailers for sooooo many pictures that can or may not be promoted widely. I found out about "whale rider", a Mauri film about Ancestry and coming of age in Mauri society. Not a documentary, I want to see it on Oahu during this trip. Looks great and seems like a family film.
