Mike, I think you're understating the actual situation for big resort type hotels. As mentioned, often the bags have been taken out of your trunk (or the taxi's trunk while you're busy paying the driver) and hauled away before you've even finished dealing with the guy opening your car door, taking the keys, and handing them to someone else. Meanwhile the guy writing you the ticket for your car is different from the guy writing the ticket for your luggage, and neither is the guy taking the luggage, or the guy taking your car, nor the guy opening the doors for you, nor the guy who brings your luggage to your room half an hour after you check in.

Even when I like luggage service or valet parking, it is this newer system of three people doing separate aspects of each job that annoys me.

I'm not sure any of this has anything to do with the original point of knute's question --"Just wondering if anyone else likes upscale without the service."
Judging from the answers here, the answer is clearly "YES".

Suze, I think you completely misunderstood my point.

And I'm sorry you find my attitude condescending... at least I can spell it right though.

Neopolitan,

I stay at large, luxury resorts for my job at least 6 times a year. I've never had anyone whisk my luggage away before I've had a chance. The worst offense has been taking the luggage out of the trunk and opening my door. I always seem to manage all of these people who are bombarding me with service and assistance wihout having to stop at an ATM machine.

I don't see what there is to misunderstand in your statement. Maybe I should quit my job as a bathroom attendant and go back to finsh up my PhD and improve my spelling skills?

Neopolitan...I sure hope you are not tipping all those people you list! Valet parking we tip when the car is brought to us, but not when it's taken away. No tips for opening doors...not car doors, not hotel doors. Tips for taking luggage, yes and for bringing it to the room, yes, but that's only two out of your list.

I've only run into bathroom attendants at very high end functions in hotels and then not all that often fortunately. It really makes me uncomfortable to just smile and say thanks but I'll be darned if I'll tip for a towel. Was talking about this with my husband over the weekend as the bathroom attendants make so many people uncomfortable, me included. He says they do it rarely, preferring instead to use the money they would otherwise spend for an attendant for nice fresh flowers in the bathrooms during these functions, and real towels, rolled, with a maid who comes in periodically to freshen things up and replace towels. Much better payback on that dollar I suspect!

I find the bathroom attendants' presence annoying and an invasion of privacy. I've even seen them in Las Vegas at three star hotels. When I'm drinking, I have to pee...A LOT. I'm not paying every time I use the restroom!

MikeT:

You have to realize most people in here are snobs. They think a college degrees makes them superior to anyone.

Secondly, I've been to nightclubs with bathroom attendants and like it. They have some pretty neat stuff that you can use (cologne, baby wipes, qtips) and I just tip them a $1 for it. How cheap everyone is. If you can afford a 5 star hotel you can tip.
