Any tips for NE Lower Peninsula in Sept?

I'm being a good sport and traveling with my husband for 5 golf courses in 5 days. I need stuff to do while he's golfing. We'll be in (in golfing order) Stanwood, just south of Big Rapids, Roscommon, near Houghton Lake (not Houghton), Arcadia - I'll spend the day at Sleeping Dunes, 2 days Bay Harbor - would love recommendations for there. I know - too much travel, but it's only about the golf. It's actually not so bad - only about two hours between locations. But I need to keep busy. Since I'll be alone, I don't want to go hiking off by myself, and I have found a few scenic drives I'll do. Any info is much appreciated. I don't think I'll have time for Mackinac Island.

Sorry - that should read NW Lower Peninsula. I'm directionally challenged.

Funny, I know about the UP but I never heard the rest of the state called the "Lower Peninsula". I learn something new every day!

I enjoyed the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum at Roscommon, but then my father was in the CCC.

Hartwick Pines State Park is also in the area. It is one of the largest parks in Michigan and has a section of old growth virgin white pines a& a logging museum. Some trees are over 350 years old and about 150 feet tall.

You need some cherry pie with chocolate sauce at the Cherry Hut in Beulah.

Well, I wasn't sure how to say "not the UP". At least you knew what I meant since the tag (Michigan) didn't post.

We'll be staying in Beulah, so thanks for the cherry pie tip!

I will definitely look onto Hartwick - big fan of great state parks.

But the Lower Peninsula is never the "LP."

I do like the tradition that came since I moved away from Michigan, of Yoopers (people from the UP) calling people that live "below the bridge" trolls.
