any recent stays at Hotel Edison, N.Y.>

Looking at a stay here in September. I understand the location is great - any comments on the hotel itself, restaurant etc. Thanks.

The location IS great for tourists. I can't comment on the rooms (since I LIVE in NYC) but I have eated at the Edison Cafe (basically a diner) many times. It's not GREAT food, but it's quick, cheap, decent and never too crowded. The waitstaff is pretty gruff...but that's kind of the charm of the place. I think the lobby is pretty cool too...a little of old NY.

Dear Bashful, I've stayed at the Edison 4 or 5 times over the last few years and haven't had a bad experience yet. It's comfortable and not as expensive as some other places right around Times Square. The cafe is great, too! Enjoy your trip.

The major negative comment is the rooms are small. Since you won't be spending that much time in the room the size should be of little concern.

Yes..... the restaurant is definitely a must for a quick bite - just some soup or a sandwich. There are some real old school NYC types on the staff - the crustiness (of the staff, not the bread) and the moderate grumpiness all seem to be loveable idiosyncrasies of the place. Plenty of tourists go there but plenty of locals too - it's not a typical tourist joint.

If you eat at the cafe, make sure you look at your bill. Every so often the management gets stupid and includes a forced gratuity onto the check (no matter what size your party).
