Any info on Massanutten??

Hi...does anybody have any info on Massanutten in Virginia. It's a candidate for a family get together. (The Summit) I'm concerned because I've never heard of it and am wondering if there is enough to do for a whole week. The trip would be in Sept.

Appreciate the info.

thanks,
Cheryl

If the colors are changing -- especially along Skyline Drive -- it's a gorgeous area. Lots of deer on the grounds. A golf course. Large indoor pool for the kids. Nice weekend getaway in a quiet area.

You can check out their website at www.massresort.com

It's a lovely resort with indoor and outdoor pools, a golf course, horseback riding, lots of hiking areas, and stuff for kids to do. The Summit units you will be staying in are very nice. About 1200 sq. ft. 2 bedrooms & 2 baths. If you get the upper unit you will get a full kitchen with a regular stove and oven and a screened porch. The lower unit kitchen does not have a stove/oven, but some electrical appliances and a lovely grill on the deck. It does have a full fridge & the rest of the necessary things in a kitchen. Located outside the door to the lower unit & under the stairs is the washer/dryer that is shared by both units.

There is a very nice American Heritage park near by that has homes/farm from various parts of the world to show you what and how people used to live. People are dressed like they used to. Luray caverns, and other caverns are near by. Drive around the resort in the evening and look for deer. It is a ski resort too. They also have a few tours you can take too. We went to Washington DC on one.

I love this area in the winter when it's snowy, or the spring. But in the summer, I swear it's hotter and muggier than Florida. And if that's the case you'll not want to go to the Shenandoah parks that I love because the bugs will eat you alive. My advice would be to check out that pool and make sure it's one you and your kids will enjoy spending a week in. Also, check out the area for renting a boat and water skiing.

There is much to see and do in the Shenandoah Valley from Roanoke up to Strasburg. Since you have so much time to plan the trip, why not contact the Virginia CVB for tourist information?

You'll have a great time. We go most every year in the spring. Last spring we brought several families of friends along. Their kids all got Activity Passes and planned their week so completely that they didn't really leave the resort (crafts, beauty makeover, tai chi, etc. etc.). You need a car -- it's pretty spread out and in the mountains besides, so you can't really walk from place to place. mamajo gave you a good description. For DH and I, we usually get a nice massage, there are a couple of golf courses, I catch some craft-type classes, and we never ever miss the Winemaker's Dinner. September should be a great time, weather-wise, as early fall should be in the air and not muggy. If you DO find time to leave the resort, check out the various wineries in the area. And the historic sites -- Monticello in Charlottesville is nearby, as well as the Madison and the Monroe houses. Sperryville is a great little village for arts, antiques and old-timey flavor. A week is never long enough.
