Any codes or tricks for a cheap car rental?

I need to book a car for over a week. Going into one airport and out thru another one. That actually saved $75 dollars. But, before I book a midsize for $540 I'd like to see if I can find a code thru you guys or see ifyou have a trick.

Hertz gives good rates with an AAA card, but they ALWAYS request to see the card at time of rental. My code for Washington State AAA is 260.

The best deals I find on car rentals so far, is going away from the airport. A pain but worth it. The smaller places work with you and are really relaxed. I have had them throw in upgrades and not be real strict with the rules. Always look for coupons and your AAA card. Check the websites for the names of the specials ... you need to ask for them.

I've plugged in "car rental discount codes" into Google in the past and came up with several websites that give codes you can use, some by area, some by car company, some in general.

If you are a member of Sams Club or Costco, they get a discounted rate at most major car rental agencies.

If the rental is in 2006, try AWD code K817625 with Avis.

I seem to always save a significant amount through Hotwire. But you have to pay in full when you book with them.

Renting a car for three weeks recently in Los Angeles, I tryed a dozen agencies and about a dozen discount codes. When all was done, the best rate I got was from Dollar -- and NOT using a special discount code. I paid $284 all inclusive of taxes (I decline CDW and insurance as I'm already covered) for the full three weeks. That was for an economy car -- like Dodge Neon, but actually they gave me a Grand Caravan mini van.

This may seem odd, but go to the "Transportation" board on disboards.com. It is a Disney-related message board, but there are always lots of rental car discount threads. Through a code on that board, I got a free Emerald club membership, plus a great rate. The rate codes don't just apply to MCO, of course. Also, mousesavers.com publishes lots of rental car discount codes. Again, the thrust of the board is Disney, but the codes work all over.

I've found that travelzoo.com's list of rental car deals is pretty good. I have signed up for the Alamo deals, but they're usually listed on Travelzoo anyways.

But unless it's changed recently you can't bid on Priceline for a rental car with a different drop off from pick up. That won't help frenchtoile.

I have always found the best prices is with Hotwire, not priceline. I used to use my AAA card discount, but Hotwire beats everything now.

If you have American Express - go to their site and log in. Click Shopping then Offers then choose Travel - they have special discount codes from various rental companies. Compare prices from all. I am sure Visa and MC have special offers for cardholders as well.

I've had good luck on rates (particularly on open jaws) at Travelocity.

If you are a member of AARP, go to http://www.aarp.org/aarp_benefits/of...l/car_rentals/ It usually isn't better than I can get without it, but one time at a small airport in northern Michigan is saved me $25 A DAY.
