Brookside has given you some great pointers.
Personally I do things differently. I book through the hotel's own website because it's always easier to cancel later, no middleman, just a cancellation number.
The second thing is that I have never gone over $200 for a 4* hotel in NY.
If you go in May the rooms may be easier to get and cheaper because it's just before the summer vacation peak period.
As for when to bid, I'd suggest starting in January, 2008. I've started as early as four months before trip date and as late as the day before.
The latests time that I've ever tried to bid was 8 am (Pacific time) on the very day the room was needed; didn't get the room because the price was too low. When I tried a different zone about 15 minutes later, the option to bid same day was gone.
As for Tribeca, that's too far away (again for me) from the major activities area. MTE and MTW have been the best zones for me to bid. Right now the Barclay is going for $158 on BFT, that's pretty good for a 4* hotel. There are no 4* hotels available for the Upper Eastside or the Upper Westside.
If your bid is rejected, wait 24 hours and bid again.
Hope this helps a bit!

easy traveller, you're right about prices normally being cheaper through the hotel's own website, but in the case of HI Express, the rates were cheaper on quickbook, for some reason. HI site = $360 per night; quickbook.com = $299.

Speaking of prices being lower through sites other than the hotel's own website, what is "Skoosh"? Is it just another booker? I ask because I was looking for another fodorite last night, and found a much better price on Skoosh than on any other site for a particular hotel here in SF.

Update on my missing Priceline reservation:
First of all, I owe Sheraton Hotels a huge apology. The problem I described with the missing Priceline reservation was with the SLC Aiport Hilton Hotel, not Sheraton. I can only attribute the gaffe to a senior moment.
Now for the update. To date, the problem had not been resolved. My road trip is taking me through SLC on the way home so I stopped at the hotel to talk to the manager. He told me he had not been able to figure out what happened to cause the problem but he issued a credit to my credit card for the full amount of the overcharge so, assuming nothing happens to that credit on the way through the system, it appears this problem has finally been resolved.
