San Francisco - safe to walk alone at night?
Hi everyone,
Okay, so some of you may be familiar with my situation. My son goes to Sonoma State University and I was trying to find out how he could get from SSU to SF CalTrain 4th St station to catch a bus home to LA. Thank you to everyone who responded on my other thread. Your suggestion have been invaluable.
So, I've done some research from your suggestions and I've found that he can take the Golden Gate Transit #80 to either Mission & 1st or 8th & Folsom. From each of these stops, he would have to walk to the Muni station to get the CalTrain station. I'm not familiar with SF, so I don't know if these areas are safe to walk alone at night, even for a male. He'd be walking on a Thursday night at about 10p.
Here are the two areas he would have to walk:
Mission St & 1st St >> Metro Embarcadero Station, 298 Market St
8th St & Folsom St >> Bryant St. & 8th St.
The 8th St/Folsom St stop is a shorter walk to the next pick-up point, but I'd rather that he walk further if it means that it's safer.
Thanks everyone! We're getting close here to figuring this all out!

I agree with Mike, but if I were doing it, I would prefer the Mission and 1st. From there it is, admittetdly four blocks to the Embarcadero Muni station, but it is in an area frequented by tourists with good hotels, etc.
I am not familiar with the area around 8th and Folsom, but my gut feeling, for me, would be the former.

Dear jlaughs,
I work very close by Mission and Fremont, which is one block over from Mission and First.
I have had occasion to stop by the office at all hours of the night, and can honestly say that First and Mission is not a hugely risky area at 10p.m. If it were me, I would probably walk up Fremont Street instead of First just because there are two or three office buildings with lit-up lobbies on Fremont between Market and Mission. There is a BART/Muni Metro entrance at Fremont and Market.
Just tell him to ignore any panhandlers, etc. and also to NOT cut across any of the little pocket parks and plazas.
