Anniversary trip - San Diego

My husband and I are planning a trip to San Diego in August and did not know where a nice place to stay. Interested in a resort with a spa. He is also planning to play golf at Torrey Pines. Any suggestions of places?

Kristen:
I visited San Diego with my husband last year and we stayed at a WONDERFUL resort that made our trip all the better - it's called Loews and it's on the Coronado Island - if you call and ask what specials are going on or check online, you can get a great deal. They have a spa as well with salon services, massage, etc.
Have a great trip! I love San Diego!

Take a look at the Lodge at Torrey Pines. www.lodgetorreypines.com. It's a new hotel, right next to the golf course, pretty expensive, and it has a spa. Be aware, though, that in August the horse races are on at Del Mar and it may be difficult to get hotel rooms anywhere close.

L'Auberge Del Mar is a great place with spa facilities. Wonderful place for an anniversary. It's less than 5 miles to the Golf Course at Torrey Pines. Romantic and sophisticated. In August you may have to contend with lots of kids at the bigger hotels and even at the Del but here you will probably be around mostly adults (if that aspect is improtant to you)

Suzie, L'Auberge was my first thought too, but it will be booked in August because of the races.

If you've never been to Del Mar before ("where the surf meets the turf") you should go there. I think it is the most beautiful race track in the USA. It's very nostalgic with lots of photos of Bing and the old time boys and a great way to spend an afternoon. It's the only place where I really look forward to going to the horse races. Carrie

Yes Barbara how could Kristen pass it up? I tried some websites and found one where I could get a room for two nights (8/15-8/17) at L'Auberge for $239 per night. Lower prices required a call and couldn't be booked. Don't know Kristen's actual dates but try this web site for reservations:

Thank you for replying. Great advice. We decided to stay the first three days at The Lodge at Torrey Pines. They were the only resort that had a spa and golf package. The other days we are going to stay at the Loews-Coronado Island. Hope we made the right choice. Do you have any suggestions for resturants? Should we go to the zoo or animal park? LÁuberge Del Mar looked wonderful but no rooms available during the beginning of August. Thanks.

We stayed at Lowes-Coronado last summer and loved it. I also recommend going to the horse races at Del Mar one day. This is such a historical race track, lots of fun and beautiful as well! The zoo was also a fun day. I love San Diego. We're planning to go back again this year during late August while the Del Mar racing is going on. There is a nice outdoor restaurant right at the finish line. You feel like you're with all the hoy-ploy! I wish a wonderful anniversary trip. Megan

If you're into gambling, Harrah's is opening a casino on August 8 (in tight with the Indians I believe). Anyway, there are several nice Indian Casinos that have all the games that the Vegas casinos have without the 4 hour drive. This is what we enjoy, to each his own. Happy Anniversary. Sorry I have no suggestions for hotels, we stay with my parents while there. Jimmy

Do they accept reservations at the race track at Del Mar? We will be visiting San Diego during the first week of August and I'd love to see Del Mar. I've heard it's even nicer than Saratoga...? Mark

Mark, the races at Del Mar are organized by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. Their web site is www.dmtc.com. All the information you need about reservations should be there.

We, too, have stayed at Loews Coronado Bay Resort and loved it. It is a beautiful resort and a very good choice. I would stay there again!!
