Amtrak Lower Level vs Reserved Coach - Coast Starlight
Can you tell me what the difference between Lower Level Coach and Reserved Coach? There are four of us traveling on the Coast Starlight from Santa Barbara to San Francisco in March - and I am working on reserving the tickets. Is it worth it to reserve two rooms or to just do the Coach Lower Level, Coach Reserve or to get two rooms?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

Coach cars and cars with rooms are on different parts of the train. Both types have upper and lower levels. Supposedly the lower level is set aside for people with physical disabilities that make climbing the stairs to the upper level difficult. If you can manage the stairs, I suggest the upper level because the visibility is much better.
For that short a leg, mostly +in day light, I would not spend the extra money for the rooms. On the other hand, for overnight trips, I always book a room.

Lower level is for disabled, and if the train is full, they will want to see a proof of disability, even if senior.
From SB to SF is a (mostly) daytime trip, I would not pay more for a bed. "Reserved" only means you are guaranteed to get a seat, it will not be assigned, you'll take what's available.
Do you know your reservation will include the bus transfer to the city if you do it correctly?

After riding the Starlight from LA to Seattle mutiple times, I agree with the poster who recommend not buying the roomettte.
on that leg of the trip you want to be on the upper level for the views. Use the lounge car if you can find a seat.
IMO that is the most scenic and interested leg of the whole route.
