Amtrak and Alaska Airlines to Maui
Since I hate the long drive from home to PDX We are driving to Albany OR and taking the early morning train to Portland station arriving about 8AM. The parking at Albany is free and the fare from Albany to Portland for 2 is less than what we would pay for parking in an airport lot. The one time that we did park in an airport lot, someone tried to break into the car and messed up the lock.
We'll take LYFT to the PDX airport for our noon flight to Maui (OGG). Hawaii will be my 50th state to visit and find a geocache in in the past 13 years.
Our DD and SIL will be arriving from the east coast less than an hour after us. We are hoping for great weather for the 5 days we will be there.
Any advice from those of you that have been to Maui recently?
The return from Maui will be somewhat different. Our oldest grandson will be graduating from High School in northern Los Angeles. We fly from OGG to SFO to LAX . Our only cheap choice for a rental vehicle from LAX on Memorial Day was a van rented through Costco.
We take the Amtrak bus to Bakersfield and the San Joaquin to Sacramento on June 1. We have about 3-4 hours in Sacramento before our midnight train north to Oregon.
We may try to organize a GTG in downtown Sacramento sometime after 8PM on June 1.

24 hours from now DW and I will be on the train to Portland. Intending on being at PDX by 10AM for the noon flight to Maui. The luau is booked for Wednesday night. We get to see the sunrise on Sunday morning before we return on the red eye Sunday night.
We are not allowed to drive the rental car to Hana so don't even suggest it. I get to log my 1900th geocache in my 50th state to find a geocache in.
What are we missing?

I will probably drive up Haleakala in daylight sometime Thursday or Friday. There is a good Earth Cache up there and some physical caches lower outside the National Park
The luau is in Lahaina and we will be there for a few hours before it starts. There is a good virtual cache at the lighthouse in Lahaina.
At some point I will go up into the Iao Valley (pronounced ee-oh) for an Earth Cache and a nearby physical cache

If you are going to the Old Lahaina Luau that is an amazing experience. Just loved it (my entire family did, there were 9 of us, two generations).
And yes we drove Haleakala mid-morning. No one wanted to get up in the middle of the night or drive that road in the dark to see sunrise. Still it is breathtaking. Stop at some of the short hikes on the way up and look around.

Renting from Kimos (probably a mistake) They don't want their older cars on the unpaved section of the road. They advise downshifting on the way back down Haleakala. My car is waiting for me at the airport with a key in the lock box next to the license plate. Can't beat the price if it doesn't break down.

Yes renting from Kimo's was a mistake. We found the nearly 20 year old Toyota Corolla in the parking lot. We couldn't get the lock box open. The car looked like it had been in a couple wrecks. The trunk lid was held down by a lock hasp. My wife headed to Thrifty (only place open). We paid more than 3 times as much with them and only my wife can drive ($13/day extra for me to drive).
Kehei Bay Surf is fine. We are across from a small public beach park near the Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary HQ.
Last nights luau in Lahaina was epic. 9 courses with entertainment between courses. The finale was flaming batons. The sunset was nice as well.
I did the virtual cache at the oldest Pacific lighthouse as #1900.

I'm back on the mainland. Grandson's HS graduation tomorrow night. We leave Newhall 6/1 afternoon on the Amtrak bus to Bakersfield and the San Joaquin to Stockton and a bus into Sacramento about 8PM.
Anyone want a GTG at the River City Saloon on Old Town Sacramento?

Kimo's didn't charge the card after we cancelled. Thrifty was not cheap. Over $700 for 5.5 days for a Hyundai. Our DD had a Cadillac that was rented through Costco that cost about the same for a full week.
DD drove us up Haleakala in the Cadillac about 4 AM on Sunday morning for the sunrise. We got in free with my Senior Parks Pass.
We hung out at their condo until time to head for the airport since we had to check out of Kehei Bay Surf before 11AM Sunday.
The next trip to Hawaii will be to Oahu so we can see Pearl Harbor etc.
Next Monday I start working for the USFS to pay for our trip.

Trent Nathan Fuller graduated tonight from West Ranch HS. Among the 578 graduating was the son of Floyd Mayweather. I did see the Rolls Royce leaving the stadium. The ceremony was held at the College of the Canyons. Trent will be attending there in the fall.
