There aren't THAT many stations that will carry through the mountains on AM. Just hit scan and you'll find what's there. There is a Navajo language station in Arizona that I like to listen to when going across the desert.

wow. i can't believe some people actually plan this type of thing in advance. i wonder what else you already have pre-planned
either way, there are signs along the highway indicating the station for that area.

I just hit the scan button on the radio in the area and see what news/talk radios I can get there.
After sunset, one can receive the 50,000 watts "clear channel" stations from long distance, but won't help with local weather.

www.770kkob.com covers Albuquerque and Santa Fe; you can get it some of the time in Alamogordo, but I've never tried tuning in in Taos (I suspect the Taos Hum might interfere, as KKOB is fairly conservative).

Thanks for suggestions - radiolocator.com is good for some locales. Enjoyed humourous responses. I know Fodorite travellers tend to overplan but I have a legitimate concern that our covered wagon will make it through the mountain passes before "the snow".

Covered wagon. Hm... You don't mean you're starting from Toronto, right?
If you're starting over in the Rockies in Sept and finish by end of Oct, it's very unlikely to have any significant snowfall.
Also consider a weather band radio, which should have wider coverage than local AM stations. You can find the list here:
