We were in SF about 4 years ago for first week in July. When we arrived we tried to book Alcatraz tour for any time any day we were there - all were filled. Only way we could get to Alcatraz (other than swim) was to book an all-day combined bus tour of city and Alcatraz.
As an added benefit - the half-day bus tour of SF was actually fairly good and gave us a good overview of city and a little history - something we never would have gone on if not as a means to see Alcatraz.

I ordered my tickets yesterday online for our trip at the end of August. It was easy and the tickets will be mailed directly to our home. For 7 or more tickets I do believe that you will have to pick the tickets up at the will call desk.

Native,
It's funny how many San Franciscian's have never been to Alcatraz! I lived here 9 years before I made the trip! It's a FABULOUS tour, make sure you get the audio tour. You can go at your own pace, and it has comments from actual former inmates, etc. You will really enjoy it.
Also bring a light jacket, it will be cold, and VERY WINDY out in the middle of the water.
Also, you are assigned a time to leave to go to Alcatraz, but you can stay as long as you want and catch any boat back. The view is fabulous! There are some nice places to walk around outside too. Bring some sandwiches and have lunch there...I believe they have picnic tables you can use.
You'll have a great time!!!
