Airline TV show episode 2/23

I thought it was a good episode, the best I've seen. Although in general, that show makes you not want to get on a plane and is depressing in its portrayal of nasty, dumb humans. The people who work at the airport show amazing restraint, in my opinion.

Last nights episode included a lady who packed her essential medications and then didn't make the flight they were on (because she had to wait so long for a wheelchair). Although I felt sorry for her family, and it was the airlines fault that she was so delayed, I was surprised that no one commented on the fact that you should never pack essential life or death medications.

And then there was the lady who was arguing with the doctor about not signing a release to let her mother fly after just being released from the hospital and still with an oxygen tank

It seemed as if many of the passengers wanted to blame everyone but themselves for their own lack of responsibility.

Yeah..interesting episode. I couldn't believe the oxygen lady and her daughter-in-law. She mentioned once that she "signed her out against doctor's orders" to take her on the trip, but was furious that the doctor wouldn't put in writing that it was okay for her to fly without oxygen. How ridiculous and careless.

I would have liked to see more of the adopting family...such a nice story!

I felt so bad for the poor Navy girl with her loud-mouth dad! I just can't stand it when people BLAME others for their own mistakes! We've seen this on Airline a lot--when YOU lose your tickets, don't yell at the airline! I cracked up when he was walking on to the jet way...STILL complaining and his daughter was yelling "DAD!! STOP!!" from off camera. Poor girl.

Last night's show might have been a repeat, although I hadn't seen it before. I agree about people taking responsibility for themselves. I think they show up at the gate and expect the airline personnel to do it all for them when they should have checked to make sure medications were in carry on baggage, airline was notified prior to a passenger with oxygen boarding the plane etc. What about the father with the lost ticket? Anyone could go up to the counter and say they lost a ticket. I did feel sorry for the passengers arriving by bus from Detroit who were told they would not get room vouchers. They stuck together and SW did give them the vouchers.

This show really cracks me up, I love just watching people in the airports when I'm traveling....some of the things you see....

I do have one question though, why with todays technology is losing a ticket such a problem in the eyes of an airline? I would assume it's to scare you into just using e-tickets, but why if you lose a paper ticket, can't they just check you in as if you had an e-ticket? I'm sure if somebody "found" your ticket and tried to use it, their computer would already show that you checked in and that ticket was "lost or stolen" (not to mention the fact that they would have to get a fake id that had your name) I would think that the computers that the airlines use are pretty sophisticated and i just can't figure out why they use that excuse...unless like i said, it's to scare you into using e-tickets. Any thougts?

Good point milemarker. You have to have your name/address/phone number when you make your reservation, so why not just show proof of id? I can understand if the guy didn't have a confirmed reservation and said he lost his ticket.

Does anyone else think that SW's policies are a little too stringent? Is this how they keep costs down by being so strict? Or are the other airlines just as bad?

Interesting comments so far. Anyone who has worked with the public to any degree can tell you that most people look to blame someone else for problems of their own making - as travelisfun pointed out. But, why is the responsibility for losing a ticket and fixing the problem now shifted to the airline in the minds of some?

That person lost the ticket and now the airline needs to be the one to fix the mess of someone else's creation.

The simple reason why the airline penalizes those who lose tickets is that they want to reinforce you NOT to lose the ticket. Could they just check the computer and all would be well, probably. But then, aren't you just telling people to "go ahead, be careless because you aren't going to need the ticket anyway."

Wow -- I thought that was the best episode yet. Actually yelled at the TV "Why would you put necessary meds in CHECKED luggage?". Maybe all airlines should post that in big letters near baggage checking areas to save people from themselves. And I loved the family in Chicago who checked oxygen grandmother out of the hospital early to go to Vegas. The daughter yelled: "What does she need oxygen for if she's just sitting on her *ss?". My nursing textbook says that an airline cabin is pressured to have as much oxygen as exists at approx 8000 feet above sea level. I wonder if the angry daughter even realized that oxygen is an explosive. The 10 year old son turns around at the end and threatens to sue the airline. Very nice. Those SW employees on that show must have nerves of steel, and I am very impressed by them.

This is a good show. Comes on Monday nights at 10:00 on A&E channel. Check your local cable/satellite listing.

I couldn't get over the family who did not keep the elder ladies medication with them. If it was that urgent (do or die situation) you would think to keep that in the carry-on bag. Not send it with her luggage to be checked in!!! That was VERY irresponsible on there part!

I liked it when the grandma said "look at my grandson ..he is crying"..then the camera zoomed in and he wasn't crying at all!!!! But he put on a big sad face after grandma said that. Hag.

I don't know why that dad had a paper ticket. Where did he get it? Who issues paper tickets? Why would he want a paper ticket?

I thought that nowadays you and your luggage have to fly together and if you don't make the flight, they pull your bags. So how did her medication get on the plane and she didn't?

And kudos to those SW employees-it blows my mind what some of those passengers try to get away with.

LMAO @ last night's show. I thought everyone learned by now to carry your most important items on your carryons!! Would you throw your wallet in your checked luggage? So why would you throw important meds in luggage? Also if she needed a wheelchair so badly that they waited an hour for one, why doesn't she have one of her own? She could have made it to the gate on the crutches within an hour, if that was the case.

As for traveling with your bags, I managed to travel while my luggage didn't. I landed at LGA only to find my luggage was taking an extended vacation at MIA.

And the grandmother and her daughter in law! They took her out of the hospital for the trip and clearly didn't call the airline to check regulations, and then wondered why the woman couldn't board with oxygen tanks? Don't people realize even in a 9/11 world that there are limits to what you can travel with? And I found it rather amusing that they kept saying how the grandson first said he was looking forward to the trip for a month, and then a minute later said he was looking forward to it for a week. If you had enough time to plan the trip, you had enough time to call the airline and find out the proper protocol.

As for the people constantly getting drunk or belligerent to the staff....I always wonder how these people would react if the shoe was on the other foot.

I haven't seen much of this show, but tuned in this weekend and saw the episode when the Customer Service Manager assisted a man who had deficated on himself. It was very touching and an unbelieveable gesture of human kindness. Can you get better service/compassion than that ? I was blown away.

Another lesson from this show unfortunately seems to be that if you scream long and loud enough you'll often get what you want. The SW manager kept insisting to the medication lady that they couldn't fly her on another airline. The family screamed until oh, wait, we can after all put you on Air West. I've seen this kind of "magical solution" before- I think if the father-daughter's flight hadn't been so soon he could've stood at the desk and badgered them into looking up his ticket. I understand the customer service reps have a very difficult job dealing with rude people, but when they give in to people who are behaving abominably (especially on camera), it encourages rudeness. Not that I would ever, ever, want their jobs.
