Check out Aspen Mountain Lodge. It's a suprisingly affordable option in an otherwise spendy place. They also have a nice, included, breakfast. Very comfortable with nice amenities.
Be sure to drive up Independence Pass while you're there for some other-worldly views. Also, if you're late in the month, and you go midweek, you can drive into the Maroon Bells park. The Aspen will be beautiful in late Sept.

Yeah, we live just outside Denver and know all too well how expensive it is to stay in mountain resorts any time of year. We were actually married in Aspen at the Sardy House years ago. I just thought I'd throw this post out as I've not done any research yet. We're looking for something nice for around $300/night. Thanks Catbert, Independence Pass is on the to-do list. Amazing isn't it! We're hoping to hit it when the aspen are changing.

Last year I stayed at the Mountain Chalet...and in less than two weeks I'll be there again for a week! Very affordable and a wonderful breakfast is included in the price.
