Advise on Places to Stay on Oahu and Big Island

We are planning on going to Oahu and the Big Island in March 2011. I am looking for advice on places to stay in Oahu that are outside of the Waikik areai. I am also looking for advice on places to stay on the Big Island. We will be renting a car on both Islands. Budget is between $100-150/night. I am not looking for 5 star places but 2-3 star places with ambience and character.

If you intend to stay at Volcano on the Big Island, I like Aloha Junction B&B. As far as hotels, Keauhou Outrigger and the Royal Kona in the Kailua Kona area are within your price range.

I have also seen Priceline "winners" of Hapuna Prince and Marriot Waikaloa for under $100.00.

We rented a place in Volcano through vrbo.com called Kahili Ginger Estate. It could sleep 6 easily and had a huge kitchen. There were a few things that some might not like, such as an outdoor grill whose handle had fallen off but the tv and stereo, kitchen appliance, washing/drying machines, wifi internet all worked perfectly. It was 1.8 miles from the national park. Price was ~$120/night.

Why ambience & character ? - u r going to Hawaii - thats enough.

Been BI - 4/5 times stay at Kona Seaside - Just off Alii - across from King Kam. FUNKY - CHEAP spend money on other stuff.

Last summer, I got the Marriott on the Big Island for $130 on priceline, and it was excellent. It's right on A-Bay with a great beach and plenty of sea turtles, and the room and grounds were really nice.
