Adirondacks for the fall
Anyone out there interested in going to the Adirondacks for the fall? There are such great inns and restaurants there - not to mention wonderful scenery and neat little historic towns. And they're not all in Lake Placid! The only caveat - hunting season starts early there so it may turn some people off hiking (it does me).

I live in the Adirondacks, right outside of Lake George and the leaves are just beginning to change now. Weve actually had warmer than usual weather which has been nice. Hunting season will be arriving shortly, but on the marked trails you should be fine

Cindy:
I plan on taking the family up to the Adirondacks this fall. Have only skied at Gore, so I have only seen the "tip of the Forest"! I been searching posts for ideas. Any driving routes that should not be missed for fall scenery? Any recommendations for clean places to stay for two nights, easy on the wallet?
Thanks!

Try the Irondequoit Inn in Piseco (near Speculator). It's nice. Some rooms have a shared bath, but they the bathrooms are numerous, very clean, and big. They have a web site. Driving routes are tougher - they're all good, but personally if I drive too much in the Adirondacks I start to feel like I've spent the whole day in the car.

I got interested in the Lake George area, after reading an article in "Healing Retreats and Spas" per the Sagamore. I became intertest in flying to Buffalo, training to Albany, hanging out in Lake George, then training to NYC for a day or so, before flying back to Calif. Any comments, suggestions?

Richard, why not bypass Buffalo and fly straight to Albany? Albany's benefited from the "Southwest effect"; since Southwest started flying here in 2000, airfares have come way down and you might just find a good deal. Lake George is just an hour away - more time to hang out there.
BTW, I live in the Albany area, and for those interested in leaf peeping, do it real soon. The weather's gone from unseasonably warm to unseasonably cold (we had a little snow yesterday morning). We've had an explosion of color but the leaves are dropping fast.
Wouldn't be surprised if we're past peak by next week.

Richard - I'm near Albany too, and Ben is correct about foliage. There are only 3 Amtraks a day from Buffalo to here, but the ride thru the Mohawk Valley will be beautiful. Southwest does have some great prices to Albany, but not from Buffalo.
if you're renting a car from Albany Airport, get off Amtrak at Schenectady and ride the #70 bus (Schenectady-Troy) to the Shuttle-Fly stop (Vley Rd), then transfer to the Shuttle-Fly. Cost
1, time: ~1 hour, NOT on Sundays check www.cdta.org website.
If it's spas & healing waters you're interested in, I'd think Saratoga is where you want to go, altho the Sagamore is very nice, so is the Gideon Putnam in Saratoga State park. (there is no X in my REAL eddress)
