ABQ - where to buy gas before returning rental car?

What is the closest station to fill the gas tank before returning our rental car for our trip in northern New Mexico to the airport at ABQ? We'll be driving from Santa Fe, which exit from the interstate & directions would be much appreciated.

Heading south on I 25 - take the exit for Coal [a little ways past the intersection for I 40].

There is Chevron gas station at the end of the exit ramp, on the right [west] side of the ramp.

Amazingly, they have good prices even though they are on exit ramp.

You can then exit out of the gas station and get back on the ramp; go cross Coal and head up the entrance ramp back onto I 25 Southbound.

Do not get onto Coal -- which is one way, heading west.

[If you do that, make a right at your first opportunity and then make another right onto Lead. Then you should be able to make another right to get you back to on ramp.]
From there, it is only a few miles to the Transportation Center where are the rentals are located. You could also stop at terminal and off load luggage and or passengers and have the drive continue alone to return the car and then hop on the rental car shuttle back to airport.

Rental center is a short 5 minute ride from airport.

If you're a Costco or Sam's Club member, they are located across the street from each other at I-25 and Montano/Montgomery. Take a right at the exit, then turn right at the first light. Turn left at the bottom of the hill, and voila!

Lee Ann is correct, but I am not sure if that would be "close enough" for the rental car company.

These days, they say that you must be within a certain # of miles when you fill up. I haven't had to show my gas receipt the last 2 times I rented with Dollar, but they did give a mileage limit on distance from gas station to rental return.

The station I suggested is about 2 miles from return location; Costco and Sam's might be 5. That might be within rental agreement range.

Check with rental car company.
I get really paranoid with these minute details!

Thank you, both, for the info - exactly what I needed. Like you, I've been hearing how car rental companies are going to be more particular about the distance between airport & fuelings upon return. I'm trying to avoid any issues.
