What is everybody's opinion on the 86th floor observatory of the ESB vs. the 102th floor observatory? Is the 102th floor worth it or is it better to just stick with the 86th floor? I am thinking about getting a new york city pass, which I think covers the cost of both observation decks? So, then the question is the 102th floor worth the extra time? Technically, the 102th floor is higher, but does the view seem any higher or otherwise different? Do you see much more of the building? One other question- Which time of day is the least busy? I was thinking morning right when it opens and getting there first thing.

Probably least busy is late at night - before they close. First thing n the am is usually mobbed.

And, IMHO Top of the Rock is a much better deal than the ESB- times tickets and don;t waste forever on line.

I reco going near sunset - so you can see the city both during daytime and at night.

I am going to do both. I have to see the ESB. It one of the most famous buildings in the US. Do you think the 86th floor is better or the 102th floor? Is the 102th worth it even if it is free with the NYC pass?

The difference in views is negligible. You're adding perhaps 5 minutes time getting up and getting down, and in my opinion that's also negligible. If you can do it for no additional cost, then why not? If your schedule is booked that closely, then only you can answer the question of whether or not you have the extra time.

Doug, you have been a huge help. That is the answer I was looking for. Everybody seems to recommend just going to the 86th floor because it is outdoor and not as cramped as the 102th floor. But, if it is only 5 minutes extra and is free, than it is probably worth it.

Of course, if there is a line for the upper observatory, then you can just skip it.

I prefer the 86th floor because it is outside.

Go at night, no lines.

I am confused. Some people say night is the busiest because people go up to see NYC all lit up. And then some people say that morning is the busiest when somebody else told me first thing in the morning is the best. What about at sunset? I am thinking about doing top of the rock during the day and the Empire State Building at night or sunset. Do you still get the feeling of how far up you are? Can you still see quite a distance like the statue of liberty?

You go up to 86th floor. That's where you're spending most of your time, regardless. If the line to the 102th is short, then do it. You go up there, and you'll be back down soon anyways, as there's no much room and you're looking through the glass.

If the line is long, then forget it.

Go between 5PM and 7PM when people are eating or getting ready for the theater.

Also, about a half an hour before they close is also a good time to go.

In summer and in warmer months, it is light at 5PM and somewhat right now. So, that might be the right time to go.
