We're flying into Honolulu. but if there was something really unmissable elsewhere I guess we could fly there too is you think it's worth it.

Thanks

James, beside telling you to head to the north shore to do your surfing, your inquiry is way too broad to give any specific recommendations. What are you and your g/f interested in seeing and doing? Or not seeing and doing? Are you bothered by crowds? If so, don't stay in or near Honolulu, especially Waikiki.

All of the major Hawaiian islands have beaches, hiking, water sports etc. Tell us more about your interests.

We stayed on the North Shore of Oahu at Turtle Bay. We really liked it. I think you could keep yourselves really busy on Oahu for 5 days. I'd check out the Pollonesian Cultural Center, Arizona Memorial, of course the Bonzi Pipeline and that whole stretch of beach, then there's Honolulu, Wakiki beach and China town. There are some neat little towns along the North Shore to have meals and poke around in. My guess is that you'll wish you had more than 5 days. Of course there are some new lava flows on the Big Island that I wish I could go see, but they may not be so impressive in Sept. Anyway, have a blast!!!

I guess you've already figured out that the best surfing (are you talking about using a full or a body board?) is notg at Waikiki if only because it is a reef-sheltered beach. the North Shore is where a lot of board surfing takes place but you can also body board at places such as Sandy Beach or at Mokapuu which are closer to the Waikiki area than the N.S.

Oahu has a lot to offer despite a lot of people telling you that you HAVE to go to Maui or that you HAVE to go to the Big Island, etc. But it does depend on your interests...Oahu can have a LOT more to offer in some of the nightlife departments than these other islands.

Whatever, have a great trip.

To narrow it down for you... we're not bothered by crowds but would probably like to spend a some time in a more secluded spot. Interests? Snorkelling, longboard surfing, meals/drinks, water sports, would like to see lava flow... a bit of shopping... whale watching?

I believe September is way too early for the whales. You'd have to go to the Big Island to see lava flow - and it's not always reachable there. If you only have five days, stay on Oahu. Spend two nights in the Waikiki area and three nights on the north shore. If the Hawaii bug bites you then next time you can visit other islands.

If you will be there only 5 days I would stick to Oahu. You don't want to waste a precious day traveling and there is PLENTY to do on Oahu. Check out the other islands on your next visit. I'm confident after your Oahu experience you will be back.
