10 days in Oahu - Waikiki and where?

Hi Fodorites,

My 1-year-old and I will be tagging along with my husband on his business trip to Honolulu in early August. So, we'll start out staying in the Waikiki area. Once he's done working, we'll have 5 more days to explore the island. (We considered going to another island, but with a baby it seems like more work than necessary for this trip.)

So, our question is... where to stay for the second half of our trip? Perhaps the north shore or windward side? We're looking for beaches and relaxation, and to see the non-Waikiki beauty of Oahu. We don't need activities or nightlife, but want to be reasonably close to a town with restaurants and a grocery store.

Thanks all!

Kailua/Lanikai or North Shore would be my top choices.

Oahu is not that big & you can get around the island in just a few hours.

Most of the restaurants are in Honolulu/Waikiki, but there are also many in Kailua & Haleiwa.

Grocery stores located all over the island.

Lots of Oahu info:

The north shore is beautiful. We loved it there, but I seem to remember the water being pretty rough. We stayed at Turtle Bay where they have a protected beach. It was great!

I would definitely try Kailua/Lanikai. The beaches are gorgeous and relatively uncrowded. We use www.vrbo.com for our family's accommodations when we stay there. We enjoy having a house and being able to cook our own breakfasts. That would be a plus with a baby in tow. They have places small enough for your little family. Have fun.
