This is meant, somewhat, in jest:
1) Park yourself on a blanket on the mall at 8am to ensure you can see the fireworks 13 hours later.
2) Avoid DC at all costs.

July 4th, the National Mall will be packed as well as the museums, but I think a nice way to celebrate Independence Day would be to visit the WWII Memorial - it's very impressive- walk up past the Vietnam Memorial - very sobering - keep walking up Constitution Ave. and marvel at all the people you see from every country in the world, freely enjoying themselves and finally visiting the National Archives to view the actual document which or freedoms possible.
