49ers Football

Going to my first game in Candlestick Park and have a few questions!

Best way to get to the stadium from say, Union Square?

Good place to go for a pre/post game drink & eats?

Weather tips for a mid-Oct. Sunday afternoon?
Rain gear, jacket, sunblock etc?

Any other tips or suggestions would be welcome too!

Thanks in advance for your time!

I'dame,

Oct weather varies. "Layers" is always mentioned here. It would not hurt to bring sunblock if you seats are facing the sun, even in Oct.

Do you have your own car? If so, GO EARLY!!!! If not, taxi? Busses are do-able. Ask the concierage.

Since The Stick is not known for having good restaurants in the vicinity, eat in SF before going. Gordon Biersch's may get you in the mood. Afterwards, the same suggie.

If you have your own car, getting out of there is a TOTAL MESS! Some horror stories have been told about it taking almost 90 mins just to get to the Bay Bridge from there! Can you say "GO before we leave"?

In the old days, we used to take the back way out and come down 3rd St and wind up in China Basin near the Pac Bell ballpark. Tuff neighborhood but a lot of post game traffic and we've never had a problem.

Good luck.
GO Steelers and Niners!

Thanks for your help and suggestions Kal.
I should have remembered to state I won't have a car! I was hoping either the BART would run to the stadium or that there might be "football shuttles" from various points to the game also, as they do in New Orleans. I'll take your advice about the concierage.

Go Steelers and Buccaneers!

We always stagger to the Superdome!

Check with your hotel and see if they have some kind of shuttle. Ya never know.

[email protected]! Indeed, we've done that too in New Orleans!

Staying at the Donatello on Post St. and they do have a concierage, thanks again for the suggestion.

Checked out the Gordon Biersch website, looks perfect! One more thing, how far is Pac Bell from The Stick?

A few "good" miles. Def not in walking distance. I wanna est 5-10 miles.

Just drove by the Donatello a few Fridays ago while circling the block and swearing while waiting for a parking place to open up in front of the Villa Florence.
Nothing like trying to dbl park in front of the Powell St cable car full of those darn tourists! :-"

No, no, no - do not taxi. The muni runs regular 49er express buses for ever home game. W/o a car it is by far the best way to get there.

this website give you all the info you need

Sorry to add to your woes but we'll be arriving on Oct. 16!
It's only fair however, I live on Clearwater Beach FL and have tourist issues of my own!

You're welcome. Even though I drive down from Sacramento, I sometimes go into SF, leave the car somewhere and take the muni because getting to the Stick (and especially out of there) can be such a bear.

The Muni service is very convenient . . . .

Definitely check out the Muni buses - they would be your best bet. I have seen them outside the stadium plenty of times.

As for clothing, definitely bring layers and check the weather before you take off for the game. We go to a game in late Nov/early Dec every year and have never had the same weather twice. Last year we got sunburned. The year before we were so cold and wet we thought we were going to catch pnemonia.

I second the recommendation for Gordon Beirsch before the game - it will definitely get you in the mood.

Does Gordon's website have the hours?
Remember to leave early because even a bus or taxi can get caught in pre-game traffic.

Pumpy-That was pure !!!

I'dame-Will the Bucs get lucky again this year?
I bet they were glad when they didn't have to face the Steelers again last season.

Gordon's doesn't open till 11.30am...might be pushing it for a 1.15pm game, I'll do post football there!
At what time can you buy a beer there in CA? Here in Tampa we have this silly but soon-to-be-changed law where you cannot buy a beer in a resturant until 1pm on Sundays!

Thanks!

California's laws aren't very strict for drinking. It is illegal to sell alcohol between the hours of 2am and 6am and to anyone under the age of 21. There is a 2-tiered establishment licensing system, one is for a license to sell beer and wine and the other is for a license to sell hard liquor.

irishdame: glad the Buccaneers have adopted the 49er color! Smart move!

Also smart move: stealing Chucky away from the Raiders!

May the better team win!

Be sure to bring along your wine glass & carafe of white whine--er, wine--plus some Brie. This way, you'll TOTALLY fit in with the rest of the wimpy niner fans. And don't forget to bring a pacifier, so that you can toss it to Terrell Owens when he starts whining & crying because Jeff Garcia
can't/won't throw him any passes.

Go git 'em this Sunday, Mooch!
