36 hours in Honolulu

We are going to Maui for 7 days and will then have just 36 hours in Honolulu. Any recommendations on accomodations, restaurants, sightseeing. We will definitely see Pearl Harbor, but what else is a "must do" in such a short period of time?

36 hours isn't much time. Between dealing with airports, taxi, etc. you probably won't be able to see much aside from Pearl Harbor. The Arizona Memorial is free, although you need to get a (free) ticket to take the boat out to the actual memorial. It is quite interesting and pretty moving. Depending on how busy it is you may have to wait a few hours for your boat time - so try to go early in the day if it is possible. If you are interested in military things another possibility is making a trip to the Punchbowl Memorial. It is lovely, with a view of Diamond Head and Honolulu, and also very interesting information on the battles from WWII.

Depends on what you like to do on vacation! You could hike Diamond Head one morning (go at 6 a.m.), it costs just a dollar. From there you could maybe take a trolley ride around town to see everything. A lot of tourists like Hanauma Bay, but it might take up too much of your time, given your short time frame.

Maybe a luau. I went to one when I had about the same amount of time there----it was definately touristy, but still fun in its own right.

If you are going to be in Honolulu on Wednesday or over a weekend, go early to Pearl Harbor, you can take THEBUS and walk over to Aloha Stadium for the Flea Market. (Unless there is a football game going on) Great bargains on T shirts and just about everything you can think of. The prices can't be beat!! Then, take THEBUS back to Honolulu.

Leslie,
We stayed at the Sheraton Muana Surf Rider in Honolulu. There's a Banyan Tree cafe/bar in the back of the hotel that has a beautiful view of Waikiki in the evening. Also, there's a crazy Marketplace across the street that was fun. The mall in Honolulu is mostly designer things. We went to "Cheeseburger in Paradise" one day for lunch, and Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafe another.

Maui is amazing! If you have the chance, be sure to take the road to Hana. We rented a Jeep and made a day of it. Picnic and all. Also, the sunrise on top of Haleakala was worth getting up at 4 AM. Dress warm. It's cold up there! We ate at "Bubba Gump's Shrimp" one day. It was fun, and the food was great.

Have a great trip!

I agree with Ted. A luau is a must.

I had less time than you will. I went to Pearl Harbor and drove to the north shore to see the biggest waves I'll probably ever see! You can't imagine the sound when the waves hit the beach. This is a beautiful unspoiled area not to be missed.

A point on the flea market at the Aloha Stadium. It is a good place to buy souviners - e.g. little woven baskets, shell lei, hawaiian print fabric, aloha shirts, beach towels, etc. AND it is Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday - even when there is a football game. The flea market wraps up at about 2:00 or so (same on game days). It is a huge flea market that wraps all the way around the stadium parking lot. I think it is about $0.50 fee to enter.
