3-4 hours in Chicago - help

Hi -

I am traveling to Chicago on business for a few days this week (I know, short notice!), but will be staying in a suburb.

I have Monday until about 2:30pm free, and was thinking about heading into downtown.

Does anybody have any suggestions on must sees I can fit into that short period of time?

I've only been to Chicago very briefly once before and haven't really seen anything but the inside of an office building.

Thanks!
Hilary

How are you getting downtown, and what are your interests?

If you'd get an early start, an Architectural Cruise on the Chicago River is very interesting. Navy Pier, Millenium Park, or shopping on Michigan Ave are other suggestions. The Museum of Science and Industry is one of my favorites.

Second the architectural tour, especially if you only have a few hours. Make sure you buy a ticket in advance. The tour offered by the Chicago Architectural Foundation is generally considered the best.

Agree on the Chicago Architectural Foundation River cruise. I wouldn't bother with Navy Pier for that short of time.

Which suburb may I ask? This sort of depends on what options I would recommend.

Yes, I'm figuring that depending upon the commute time etc.- that would make a difference.

I think you need to get a map (rough is fine- can print from the internet) and take a walk from basically the River area -a few blocks down state street and then over to Millenium Park and finally circle back to walk North on Michigan Ave.- if you do nothing else. And a elevator ride up to the top of one of the big buildings-maybe the Hancock to the 96th Floor might fit in for a drink, as well.

You don't have enough time to do the museums, but do have enough time for a good walk to see some features (lots are outside here) and also for the River tour. Do one that stays ON the river, and not one that goes through the locks to Lake MI- people do get confused.

Thanks everyone!

I didn't get a chance to respond before my trip, but we was able to get in and do several things. We walked around, hit some shops on Michigan Avenue, poped a squat in Millenium Park with some snacks, and enjoyed an evening at Navy Pier. We tried for a dinner cruise one night but the train was delayed and we just missed the boat (it pulled out as we were walking up!).

I am going back in October, and hope to have more free time.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions.
