I wouldn't walk it by myself at night, after 6 pm or so the downtown area gets pretty deserted and at 720 S. Michigan you are outside of even that area. If I was with my husband, I might walk it. If you get outside and you're the only people out there, you might feel more comfortable taking a cab. If you do walk, follow patg's advice and stay on Michigan Avenue, it will have the most traffic. Monroe Street isn't bad either, there's a large theatre (Shubert) and several restaurants.
Chicago weather in October is unpredictable (actually it's a year round condition) so come prepared for anything. But there is some hope, the weather guy in the Tribune says there's a good possibility we will have higher than normal temps (70 or higher) later in the month

Chicago is the greatest city. It really is pretty safe, just use common sense. The area particulary around Rush and Division, Oak Street, Ohio I feel is pretty safe even at night. I have walked it many times with my girlfriends and never had a problem. The west loop area is not as populated and therefore I usually cab it if I'm going to a restaurant out that way.
Great restaurants at all price levels abound. Try the Orignal Pancake House for breakfast, there's one in the Gold Coast (walking distance from many Michigan Ave hotels) and one in Lincoln Park. Also, Ann Sathers. Take a cab.
My favorite pizza is Lou Malnati's and Due's, Due's is on the corner of Wabash and Ontario. YOu need to know what you are going to order before they seat you.
PJ Clarke's is fun and has a nice menu, its on State Parkway, I agree with one of the postings, Francesca's has the best italian (reasonably priced but still upscale), Maggiano's is poplular with tourists and locals for its huge portions and somewhat consistent delivery...For good authentic, cheap mexican food take a cab to Fiesta Mexicana near Lincoln Park. Their margaritas are great. Also good cheap eats is Portillos beef sandwiches, just walk up Ontario. Bloomingdale's shops has Tucchi Bennuch and other decent restaurants as well. For good French bisto food, walk to Bistro Zinc, they have a great Croque Monsieur.
We've done the Wendella tours, they're fine. Navy Pier is fun to explore. I've eaten at the Shedd Aquarium's restaruant, its okay. Nice view tho.
Check out the abomination to our skyline, new NEW Soldier's Field...its pretty wild.
Enjoy the city!

Forgot about this place but for the most rockin' blues you will ever hope to hear in your life, go to Buddy Guy's Legends. Take a taxi and it has the atmosphere and decor of a bowling alley but there is no telling who could show up for a jam session. Impromptu guests; Paul McCartney, Lenny Kravitz, BB King to name a few. Also, Buddy will get on stage and jam with the band. If you like music, Legends is a must. The five or so times I've been there have been very memorable.
