The ESPN Zone will be great. I didn't know they had one in D.C.
The White house tours are fully booked our congressman said. Should I try the Senators? I was unable to confirm our reservations until recently. We are going April 10-15th. I didn't realize this was the most popular time in D.C.

I just went to the Museum of American History last Saturday - there isn't a history of hiphop exhibition currently, but it would still be interesting to a teen. Won't take you all day; there are whole exhibits you'll both have no interest in seeing. You could do it in 3-4 hours. The first floor is the least of the three, so start on the 2nd or 3rd floor.
You'll be very close to all the other museums there. The new American Indian museum looks wonderful from the outside - have no idea what the exhibits are actually like. Everyone always loves the Air and Space Museum - I don't think you could go wrong. Everyone REALLY loves the new Udvar-Hazy Smithsonian Air and Space museum out near Dulles. You'll need a way to get there, but I've never heard anyone say that they didn't enjoy it.
The Spy Museum is also good - but it costs about $15. It's also crowded on weekends. Get there early so you have enough time to see it. We went at the last entry time, with 2 hours to closing, and felt it really would have taken 3-4 hours to take it in and engage in the hands-on stuff. Definitely recommended for a teen. Very hands-on and attention-grabbing.
I hate the ESPNZONE in DC. It's miserable, overpriced, and the food and service are awful. If you absolutely have to go, just hang out in the game room on the first floor. It isn't worth it to eat a meal there. There are far better sports bars. I've been to good ESPNZONES - DC's isn't one of them.
With any luck, you'll be here in the peak time for the Cherry Blossoms (that's why you can't get tickets anywhere). The Tidal Basin is so wonderful when the blossoms are in bloom. However, on any nice weekend day during peak blooms, downtown will be absolutely mobbed with people. A blessing and a curse.
The Caps are so much fun to watch. You can get cheap tickets and have a lot of fun up in the nosebleed seats.

Thanks for the info. I will try the senators and see if they can get me into the Capital. Has anyone done a walk around tour of the outside of the White House? I see you don't need special permission for this.

I second Capxxx's nomination. Why not go watch Washington's hockey team, the Capitals play? I don't know if this is still true, but at least earlier in the year there were tickets for sale as low $5.
