Hi all,

My boyfriend and me are looking into going to New York and another destination.
We have Sep 20 - 30 available, so more or less 11 days (arriving in NY at noon on the 20th, flying out around 6pm on the 30th)

We were thinking of staying about 5 days in New York and then taking a little road trip. Either direction Boston, or perhaps Washington. Then either flying back from that other city or driving back to NY.

Does anybody have a good suggestion for a nice itinerary? We are 30, I like arts and culture, he likes nature and history, so an itinerary balancing both would be perfect !

I was thinking for example of driving via Cape Cod to Boston in about 2-3 days. I guess nature in New England will be wonderful at that time of the year.

Would very much appreciate suggestions on where to stop on the way, or alternative itineraries.

Suggestions for charming, affordable accomodation (about 100 USD a night) along the road would also be welcome !

Both Boston and DC are large airline hubs. You can/should definately fly home from one of them.

There are not a lot of "nature" options on either the NYC-Boston or NYC-DC route except the beach areas. Either way, it depends on how far off the I-95 corridor you are willing to go.

Plan on at least 5 NIGHTS in NYC (5-1/2 days).

The drive to either Boston or DC from NYC is only about 4-1/2 hours. Another possibility is to go directly to one (even by train or express bus) and plan on a day trip or two (renting a car only for the day trips) to get to a more "natural setting". This is a much simpler and easier approach, IMO.

Some good nature excursions from DC would be Harpers Ferry WV and the C&O canal, Shennandoah Mountains, Maryland's Eastern Shore, St. Mary's City MD, Civil War Battlefields, Western MD mountains.

From Boston, daytrips usually mean the coastal towns like Cape Cod, Salem, Gloucester, Nantucket, etc.

People will likely have more concrete ideas once they know which direction (north to Boston or south to DC) you are heading.

Again, my advice is not to stop en route but to do some daytrips dfrom either Boston or DC.

Boston is full of history, and we've got plenty of great art museums as well (though not as many as DC has). There is plenty to see and do in Boston for 4-5 days in regards to your interests.

Cooperstown NY has culture and nature

Really hard to suggest an itinerary because there are so many things to see and do. And you have varied interests. We are a couple of oldsters with children who have lived in New York and Massachusetts and we have many times traveled to the Northeast, including also camping in an earlier day. Also went to Yale and worked on Martha's Vineyard many years ago. Of course history is all around and we've done some genealogy in many places. Yes, Cape Cod, Maine coast, Adirondacks, Hudson River valley, all are scenic.

Then there are the festivals which we love and museums such as Sturbridge Village MA and Strawberry Banke NH. But for starters have you seen the Statue of Liberty and Niagra Falls?

A fun thing about travel is the planning so I suggest you two enjoy doing so as you research on Fodors forum, in travel guides, etc.

Thank you all for the suggestions. We'll look a bit more into it.
As flights between New York and Boston seem to be relatively cheap, I guess we'll just book return tickets to NY now and will do a bit more planning later on.
