How about getting a day room at an airport hotel and taking a nap/shower/swim in the pool, etc. I cannot think of anything much worse then not freshining up on long long flights (but that is just me).
Do a search of LAX hotels and see what you can find. You might have to call he hotel directly for day rates tho, usually they are not mentioned on websites.
The Hilton at LAX may have a spa, they have a gym.

The Murad spa is a short cab ride away from LAX. It looks like they have a special package just for you: www.murad.com/spa/jet-lag.html
You will be the most relaxed person on your flight to Munich.
Downtown Manhattan Beach is also nice for walking around, shopping, eating, etc. www.downtownmanhattanbeach.com

Posted too soon: There is also a Day Spa in Downtown Manhattan beach: http://escapemb.com/index-1.html
Whatever you do, please allow yourself enough time to check back into your flight at LAX. The lines at the International Terminal can really be a mess at certain times of the day.

If you don't have to lug your bags, as joesorce is alluding to, then you can easily catch the bus into Santa Monica and check out the Promenade and the mall there (if that's your thing). I did that once with a 7 hour layover.

Take a cab 3 miles south of LAX to Trilogy Spa in Manhattan Beach. (request Linda, my favorite). It's located in a plaza a few blocks up from the beach and pier. Several places for lunch in plaza, plus a roof top deck for relaxing outdoors.

Aloha,
Some wonderful tips I appreciate them! I have looked a the spas people have suggested and they look great! But can someone fimiliar with the airport tell me how early should I arrive back @ the airport for my 4:00PM flight to Munich?? How much time should I allow for traffic from the Manhattan Beach area to get back to the Airport at the mid to early afternoon time?? This will be on a Sunday.

There will not be much traffic on Sepulveda Blvd. on a Sunday. It takes us 7 minutes to get to the airport, but allow yourself 15 min. in case you hit red lights. : )
We arrive 2 hours before our flight for International. Is your luggage being checked through on the same airline, or will you have to check in baggage? That might add more time.

I am guessing that OP is flying United from HNL and connecting to a Lufthansa codeshare (LH 453/UA 8861 departs at 4:15 in the spring). That would mean that the United flight would arrive at terminal 7 and the Lufthansa flight would depart from the TBIT.

Sunday morning should not be too bad especially as you can take side streets to get from Manhattan Beach to LAX. Allow yourself 30 minutes though just in case you get lost, although I think it takes less than 10 minutes to get to LAX.

Aloha, mrwunrfl got the airline and timing just right!! Do you know if I will have to collect baggage at the airport in LA or do they check it straight through to Munich? Of course this would be great! I will allow myself a half hour to get to Manhattan Beach and half hour back and make sure I'm there at least 2 hours before my flight leaves. Mahalo for making this trip go even smoother for a first time travler. Ever need any help in Oahu let me know.

Aloha MelissaHI, I will see if they can check the bags through to Munich from HNL as I really dont want to have to bother with them again. I am already planning some spa and shopping time in Manhattan Beach for my 10 hour lay over in LA and getting some good advise on my Munich stay. (I think I have it posted in the right place now, new to this). Being from the Island too you know we are spolied so I think I will need some thermal layering pieces. Any suggestions on where I can get this on Oahu or do you advise shopping the Web (I have been told to shop before I go as this is expensive in Germany?? is this true? I really hate to pack too much). Mahalo!!

Nah! I just buy the silky kind of thermies from Sears. they don't take up much space in the luggage but if there's some freak cold snap, you'll have them. However, October should be pretty nice in Germany and I don't expect that you'll need thermies.

I expect that they will check your bags thru to MUC. If they were in the same terminal then I would just assume it. But they are in different terminals and it would be a big PITA to find out at LAX that you have to collect your luggage, so definitely find out for sure.
