Which is a Better Route - I-80 or I-40

I am flying to Sacramento to pick up a car and then drive it back to Winfield, Kansas. My options are 1) take I-80 into Nebraska and then drive South down Highway 81; 2) take I-80 to I-25, drive South into Denver and then take I-70 into Kansas and then South on I-35; and 3) take I-5 out of Sacramento, go East on 58 into Bakersfield, take Highway 395 to I-40, take I-40 into Oklahoma City and the North on I-35.

My plans do not include stopping to see sites or attractions.

I am looking for the fastest and safest route. I have driven I-40 multiple times (Texas to California) but have never traveled I-80 or I-70. A previous post identified taking I-70 into Denver is not recommended. Google Map indicates Options 1 & 2 to be 25 hours and Option 3 to be 26 hours.

Any suggestions on the best route would be truly appreciated.

Welcome to Fodors. You will get more responses if you post this on the Europe board, this one is for general tips.

Is that sarcasm? You will get guidance on the United States forum. You need to repost, which I see you have not done. I do not have the answer to your question, but I do know where you will find people who do have the answer, and it is not on this forum.

See the 'change forum' pull down menu? Click that and go over to the US board

And that (along w/ the other posts here) were trying to help you.

But since you posted >>A previous post identified taking I-70 into Denver is not recommended. << it would appear you already know there is a US forum.

(PS: I Live in the Sacramento area but have never driven from here east beyond Nevada in the winter so can't really help w/ your question. On the US forum are lots of folks from Utah/Colorado/Kansas who will never see your thread here)

Thank you all for your help, no sarcasm was intended.

I was becoming frustrated trying to edit and/or remove the post. Even sent an email to fodors.com and have not received any reply yet.

I will attempt to move the post to the correct forum.

Thank you again!

I see you re-posted -- hopefully you'll get some useful advice. Good luck.

(BTW -- he recommends Amtrak to everyone. Just sayin' )

This comment may be too late. However, I would take the I-40/I-35 route. These interstates are not too busy and a nice relaxing drive. I drive I-80 every day, since I live one mile north. Always busy, esp with semis.

JAGM: re all the other posts in this thread -- the OP did re-post on the US forum 7 weeks ago and got lots of response - and the trip is in the past . . .

here is the thread: http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...80-or-i-40.cfm
